18 Dec 2023 Local legends light up Christmas
After some fierce competition with dazzling displays of Christmas lights, the City of Armadale is excited to announce the two winners of its 2023 Connected Community Christmas Lights Trail competition. The Best Solar/Green Display Private Residence prize went to Romela Sanggalan from 4 Seine Mews, Champion Lakes, and features 78 festive decorations including nativity scenes, starbursts, meteor showers, holograms, fairy lights and hundreds of solar powered, brightly coloured Christmas lights.

5 Dec 2023 2023 Armadale Hills Arts Trail a roaring success
The 2023 Armadale Hills Arts Trail has once again proven to be a huge success, with the 2023 showcase setting several new records. The event was held in November, marking a change from previous years. A total of 45 artists showcased their work, and a record 937 individual sales garnered $80, 648.50 for the local artists. This is a 48% increase in individual sales from 2022, and over a 50% increase in total sales revenue. Attendance figures show 3440 visitors for 2023, up from 2998 in 2022.
5 Dec 2023 City of Armadale hosts tree protection seminar
The City of Armadale, in association with Arboriculture Australia, was proud to host a seminar on tree protection at the Kim Fletcher Gallery in Armadale District Hall. The seminar was enjoyed by multiple City business units and saw attendees from other local governments and businesses. Presenter Mark Hartley is a consulting arborist with over 30 years in the industry. Arboriculture Australia brought Mark to Perth to share his expertise and experience that comes from presenting tree seminars all over the world.
4 Dec 2023 Winners announced for 2023 Armadale Writers Award
The winners of the 2023 Armadale Writers Award were announced on Friday 1 December 2023, during a presentation at the Armadale Library. Congratulations to Tania Park (1st prize), Stefanie Koens (2nd prize), and Joel Huey (3rd prize) for their winning stories. This creative writing competition is in its seventh year and is open to adult writers living in Western Australia. This year saw over 100 entries submitted. The Armadale Writers’ Award not only acknowledges excellence in writing, but also cultivates Western Australian writing talent.

The Perth Hills Armadale Visitor Centre and The City of Armadale have created a Christmas Scavenger Hunt for kids to enjoy in the leadup to Christmas. Working in partnership with Storytowns Audio Tours, this immersive podcast style Christmas Scavenger Hunt will run from Friday 24 November 2023 – Sunday 24 December 2023.
28 Nov 2023 Roleystone Locals help to light up amidst festive fun
Roleystone residents Phil and Julie Davey are just two homeowners in the City of Armadale who have decked out their home with an array of Christmas themed lights, as part of the 2023 Connected Community Christmas Lights Trail competition. The community-minded couple have a fun-filled festive display at their home at 12 Lenore Street in Roleystone, which includes blowup Santas, oversized snowmen, a reindeer farm complete with baby reindeers, and a snow machine which sits on the roof and frequently showers visitors with a light dusting of snow.
21 Nov 2023 Inaugural Swap - Don’t Shop Saves 65kgs From Landfill
On Saturday 18 November 2023 at the Armadale District Hall, the community stepped up to fight textile waste at the City’s very first Swap - Don't Shop Fashion Gala. The free event was designed to inspire the community to sustainably refresh their wardrobes and combat textile waste that would normally end up in landfill. Shockingly Australians buy 15kg of clothing every year, disposing of 10kg per person nationally. This equates to 200,00 tonnes of clothing ending up in Australia’s landfill each year, with only 2% being recycled.
22 Nov 2023 Community Christmas lights set to sparkle
There will be no holding back on the fairy lights next month, when local homes shine bright as part of the City of Armadale’s festive campaign to light up the lives of local families. The 2023 Connected Community Christmas Lights Trail is set to encourage local community members to get into the spirit of Christmas by adorning their homes with festive decorations and twinkling lights, while gaining the opportunity to win dozens of prizes, including two major prizes of $750 in cash.

16 Oct 2023 St John of God Health Care Commissions Remarkable Art Piece from Local Noongar Sewing Group
A remarkable fabric sewn artwork from the Women Elders Sewing Group has been commissioned by St John of God health Care to be displayed within the Armadale Head to Health mental health centre, which is set to open in Armadale at the end of October. The artwork centres on the theme of Mental Health Week, promoting mental health and wellbeing through the power of art.
3 Oct 2023 Acts of Kindness in Armadale
The City of Armadale is once again launching the Acts of Kindness in Armadale project to encourage everyone to spread kindness, ahead of Mental Health Week which runs from 7 to 14 October. The City has produced a community kindness card, explaining the benefits of acts of kindness and some simple ideas of how to do it. City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield said while awareness days shine a light on important themes, this is an opportunity for the whole community to get involved and spread some kindness.
3 Oct 2023 Let’s Play – free fun day in Memorial Park
Memorial Park was the place to be for the City of Armadale’s fun free family event in recognition of Children’s Week, held on Friday 29 September, 2023. Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the event was a big success with numbers exceeding expectation, and around 800 attendees made the most of the perfect spring weather in the City’s lovely centrally located Memorial Park. “There was an array of children’s hands-on activities and entertainment, along with a free sausage sizzle provided by the Rapid Relief Team which saw a thousand sausages devoured by the crowd throughout the day.

The Awesome Armadale Kids' Festival, proudly sponsored by the City of Armadale, transformed the Kelmscott Hall into a children’s wonderland over the weekend. It was a great start to the school holidays, with carefully curated and hands-on activities, workshops, story-telling, kids market stalls, arts and crafts plus loads of fun for young kids and families.

The City of Armadale is proud to be supporting Children’s Week with a fun free family event, in Memorial Park, on Friday 29 September from 9am to 1pm. Children’s Week is an annual event celebrated in Australia to honour and acknowledge children and their talents, skills, achievements and more importantly their rights. The Children’s Week National Theme for 2023 is Children have the right to relax, play and take part in activities they enjoy.
6 Sep 2023 Budding young writers announced for the Armadale Young Writers’ Awards
Talented young writers were recognised at the 2023 Armadale Young Writers’ Awards presentation evening held on Friday 1 September, 2023 at the City of Armadale’s Administration Centre. The competition is open to students who live or go to school in the City of Armadale in Years 3 to 12. Students interested in entering the competition received some great writing tips and encouragement from local author Deb Fitzpatrick during in-house workshops, held ahead of them putting pen to paper.

For Bedfordale residents Kelvin and Emma Wright, the City of Armadale’s Environmental Habitat Links program has assisted them to increase their canopy of native plants on their hills property. Habitat Links is the City’s private land conservation program, which endeavours to conserve natural areas, promoting the importance of ecological corridors and habitat for wildlife to the wider community.

This much loved charity fun run is part of the Armadale Highland Gathering, hosted by the City of Armadale to celebrate all things Scottish. Run (or walk) the 2.5km Classic (accessible) or 5km Warrior course… but channel your inner Scot and don a kilt! Afterwards, you’re invited to get into the spirit of the Scottish culture at the Armadale Highland Gathering. Part proceeds will be donated to headspace Armadale, The Amanda Young Foundation and a third charity to be announced soon. You also have the opportunity to fundraise for your chosen charity!
15 Aug 2023 Outside the Frame Young Artists Awards 2023
The works of aspiring young artists took centre stage at the Armadale District Hall on Friday evening for the opening of the City of Armadale’s 2023 Outside the Frame Awards evening presentation. This year the City attracted entrants from 14 high schools across the Perth metropolitan region with 66 young artists exhibiting, including five local high schools. Mayor Ruth Butterfield attended the opening night exhibition and presentation of the awards and described it as an opportunity to see into the minds of our youth.
15 Aug 2023 Pioneers celebrate another year in City of Armadale
The City of Armadale hosted its annual Pioneers’ Reunion at the Kelmscott Hall on Saturday 12 August to honour its long term residents. Around 180 pioneers tucked into an array of afternoon tea snacks and the opportunity to once again reminisce with old friends and familiar faces. City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield enjoyed a chat with many of the attendees and said a lot has changed since they first settled in the City.
7 Aug 2023 Budding young artists’ work on exhibition
Aspiring young artists will once again showcase their creative works at the City of Armadale’s annual Outside the Frame Art Awards from Friday 11 to Sunday 20 August. Open to students in Years 11 and 12 throughout the Perth metropolitan region, high schools have put forward student works across seven categories including; painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, digital media/photography and mixed media.
8 Aug 2023 Habitat boxes provide refugee for local native fauna
The City of Armadale’s Habitat Links program held a workshop on Thursday 3 August, at the Environment Centre, located in Armadale Settlers Common. An informative and engaging presentation, followed by a demonstration of how to build a habitat box, was provided to participants of the Habitat Links program by Simon Cherriman, Director of Re-Cyc-Ology. The presentation outlined the need to retain mature trees so they could develop natural hollows required for wildlife to breed and shelter in.

The City of Armadale’s Spring into Armadale Festival kicks off from 1 August, and is a celebration of everything that’s special about the Armadale region of the Perth Hills. In collaboration with local community groups, tourism and small businesses the City has created a festival of events that promotes the region, encouraging people from within our community and those from the greater Perth region to join in and experience all that we have to offer.

The City of Armadale welcomes Western Power’s new state-of-the art South Metro Depot – Boyli Mia to Forrestdale. Located in the Forrestdale Business Park the impressive $123 million purpose built facility will deliver a range of services to meet the needs of the growing community and deliver safe, reliable and affordable energy. Local Noongar and Ballardong Elders were consulted by Western Power for the naming of the depot – called Boyli Mia, meaning Power House and features Aboriginal artwork by Bradley Kickett and Buffie Corunna.

Switch Your Thinking SYT is a collaborative initiative of the Cities of Armadale, Gosnells and Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire, working together to implement measures that will save energy, water and waste, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. SYT delivers programs that can assist people to make small, but meaningful changes and throughout the year will deliver a series of sustainable educational workshops for Armadale residents, using new custom designed props – making education fun and a whole lot easier.
18 Jul 2023 Funding secured for the Roleystone Karragullen Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade
The Australian Government and the City of Armadale have recently signed an Agreement to secure federal funding to support the construction of the Roleystone Karragullen Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade Station. The funding Agreement paves the way for the delivery of the Australian Government’s $2 million election commitment, being made under the Investing in Our Communities Program.
5 Jul 2023 NAIDOC Celebrations in Armadale
The City’s annual NAIDOC celebrations held at Bob Blackburn Reserve attracted a large crowd despite the threat of rainy conditions. The event commenced with a Welcome to Country followed by the traditional Smoking Ceremony performed by Mungart Yongah. The day’s activities included lots of stalls and entertainment with the traditional Aboriginal opening dance performed by Bridyia Mia Boys Group.

27 Jun 2023 City of Armadale hosts inaugural Welcome Baby to Country
The City of Armadale hosted their very first Welcome Baby to Noongar Boodja Country and Smoking ceremony for the community, held at the Champion Centre in Seville Grove on Friday 23 June, 2023. Mayor Ruth Butterfield said welcoming a baby into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is a cultural practice that involves the whole community. “The ceremony is an acknowledgement of an infant’s connection to the traditional lands on which they are born, and a celebration of their birth.”
27 Jun 2023 AILA WA Award of Excellence in play spaces
The City of Armadale’s John Dunn Challenge Park has been named as an Award of Excellence winner in the AILA 2023 Landscape Architecture Awards program, announced on Friday 23 June 2023. Since opening in April 2022 the state-of-the-art bike track has proven hugely popular with bike enthusiasts and caters for BMX and off-road activities for a wide range of levels and abilities to competition level.
20 Jun 2023 Bring your gumboots and enjoy a community planting day
Armadale Gosnells Landcare Group (AGLG), in partnership with the City of Armadale are holding a series of community planting days over the coming months. AGLG have secured grant funding to revegetate river foreshores and bushland in the Cities of Armadale and Gosnells with over 113,000 seedlings to be planted this year.
20 Jun 2023 NAIDOC Celebration Day in Armadale
Come along and celebrate the City of Armadale’s free NAIDOC event, on Tuesday 4 July, when the Bob Blackburn Reserve is transformed into a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The City’s NAIDOC celebrations are a free community event with live entertainment and activities for the whole family – everyone is welcome and it is a great chance to learn about, appreciate and celebrate Aboriginal culture.

Round two of the City of Armadale’s Community Grants Program 2022/2023 will see over $23,500 allocated to 10 community groups and not for profit organisations for projects and programs to be delivered. From camping equipment for the Roleystone Scout Group, a portable generator for the Rapid Relief Team (Armadale) to funding to the Perth United Malayalee Association for their multicultural festival, the funding will deliver considerable benefits to the wider community.
7 Jun 2023 Notice of intention to Levy Differential Rates
The City of Armadale is inviting submissions from residents on the proposed differential rates and minimum payments being proposed for the 2023/24 financial year. The City levies rates to construct and maintain facilities and infrastructure and deliver all of the services that our community requires. Differential rates are proposed to be levied on all rateable land. There are four rate groups proposed: vacant land, residential improved land, improved land zoned for business purposes and rural.

Graeme Hart, one of the City’s long standing volunteers, received a Mayors Award for being a ‘Community Hero’ during a morning tea to mark his retirement from the City’s Graffiti Removal Group, on Friday 2 June. Presented by the City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield, this award acknowledges the extraordinary effort of volunteers for the City, who willingly give up their time to give back to their communities.

22 May 2023 Calling local young authors to the Armadale Young Writers’ Awards 2023
Calling on aspiring young writers in the community – put pen to paper and get ready to enter the Armadale Young Writers’ Awards. This creative writing competition is open to all students in Years 3 to Year 12 who reside, or attend school in the City of Armadale. Entries must be prose only and stories should be 2,000 words or less. Poetry, scripts or graphic novels will not be accepted. Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the Armadale Young Writers' Awards aims to promote a love of writing and provides a wonderful opportunity to encourage students in the art of creative writing.
22 May 2023 2023 FOCUS Photographic Competition Winners Announced
Winners of the FOCUS photographic competition were announced at the Armadale Library on Saturday 20 May 2023. City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield gave out the prizes at an award presentation attended by councillors, award winners, and their families. Mayor Butterfield said the competition is hosted by the Birtwistle Local Studies Library and aims to capture present day historical reality while growing the City’s photographic collections.
9 May 2023 Minnawarra Art Award winners announced
Winners of the 2023 Minnawarra Art Awards, sharing a $25,000 prize pool, were announced at the opening event for the launch of the Armadale Arts Festival last week. The Minnawarra Arts Awards and exhibition, held in the iconic Armadale District Hall is the centrepiece of the Armadale Arts Festival and offers an exciting public program including curator and artist floor talks and Positive Ageing High Teas, ensuring it’s not just art lovers that are able to revel in this creative visual feast!

19 Apr 2023 Community Update: John Dunn Pavilion Upgrade
As part of the City of Armadale’s ongoing commitment to improving aging facilities the John Dunn Pavilion in Kelmscott is currently undergoing an upgrade. The pavilion was built in January 1978 and requires extensive upgrades to meet the needs of the current and future users. John Dunn Pavilion is home to both the Kelmscott Bulldogs Football Club and the Kelmscott Junior Football Club during the winter season and in summer the Kelmscott Baseball Club.
17 Apr 2023 Mary Jarrett announced as Festival Artist
Local Artist Mary Jarrett has been named as the Festival Artist for the 2023 Armadale Arts Festival, which runs from Friday 5 May until Sunday 21 May. Mary was selected as the Festival Artist by the Armadale Arts Festival Artist Panel for her commitment and dedication to artistic inspiration in the Armadale community. Mary said that being chosen as the Festival Artist is a wonderful honour and a great opportunity to promote the Armadale Society of Artists (ASA) and all that it’s doing to nurture art in the local community.
17 Apr 2023 Fur-real fun is back at Rushton Park
Head to Rushton Park on Sunday 30 April for some PAW-some fun! The City of Armadale’s Dogs’ Day Out is back and it’s all kicking off from 10am. It’s going to be one big party for your fur-baby as they join other four-legged friends at this pet friendly event. City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield is expecting the event to draw a large crowd given its return for the first time since 2018 having paw-sed due to COVID.

8 Feb 2023 2023 FOCUS Photographic Competition – Remnants and Ruins!
The City of Armadale’s FOCUS Photographic Competition has returned for 2023, with entries accepted until 31 March 2023. Budding amateur photographers over the age of 18 years are encouraged to grab a camera or drone to capture Armadale’s changing face in line with this year’s theme of Remnants and Ruins! City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the City is seeking images that capture aspects of the district’s history by showing the remnants and ruins of the past, either literally or thematically.
1 Feb 2023 Residents invited to tell us about their suburb
As one of Western Australia’s fastest growing local government areas, the City of Armadale’s population is forecast to tip over 150,000 by 2041. In order to keep this growth sustainable, the City is seeking feedback via the Growing our Community campaign ‘Tell us about your suburb’. City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield said it is important to continue engaging with residents to better understand what the important issues are within individual suburbs.
1 Feb 2023 Armadale welcomes new Aussies
Australia Day in Armadale saw the City host a special citizenship ceremony at the Kelmscott Hall where two residents and a community group were recognised in the Australia Day Community Citizen of the Year awards. This year a total of 133 residents from 30 countries, some from as far away as Iran and Brazil, received their Australian citizenship and celebrated alongside this year’s recipients of the Citizen of the Year awards. Mayor Ruth Butterfield said our region continues to grow and is proud of the City’s rich mix of cultures and heritage.

Two individuals and a community group received awards at the City of Armadale's recent Australia Day citizenship celebrations. While announcing the winners, City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield, said “The City is home to so many amazing individuals and groups, who contribute an enormous amount to community life. “It’s a real honour to be recognised with an Australia Day Community Citizen of the Year Award. On behalf of the City and Councillors, I congratulate all nominees and award recipients for their outstanding efforts.” Mayor Butterfield said.
