18 Dec 2020 Local wins Switch your thinking Young Re-inventor of the Year competition
City of Armadale local Kayla Bongers has won first place in the secondary school category of Switch your thinking’s Young Re-inventor of the Year competition. The 2020 Switch your thinking competition theme was Future Food, with entrants asked to submit their invention with photos and a brief description. Entries were judged on criteria including: relevance to the theme, waste reduction and practicality.
14 Dec 2020 New look Australia Day in the City of Armadale
Australia Day is expected to look a little different than usual around the country in 2021 as the wider community continues to recover from the impacts of COVID-19. Instead of the City of Armadale’s annual event in Minnawarra Park, we’re encouraging you to enjoy activities in your own home, so that we can ensure everyone’s safety on the day. We’ll have your entertainment sorted as the City partners with 107.3 Heritage FM to provide a live Australia Day broadcast on Tuesday, 26th January. Listeners can tune in from midday through to 9pm.

30 Nov 2020 Forward works at Roleystone Theatre redevelopment set to get underway
Forward works will begin in January to mark the first stage of the City of Armadale’s Roleystone Theatre redevelopment. In order to reduce the overall project timeline, a forward works package (partial demolition) was awarded to Focus Demolition and Asbestos Removal. The forward works will run concurrently with the finalisation of the design and documentation work for the theatre proper. This will ensure that there can be an immediate start once the tender for construction is awarded.
27 Nov 2020 City launches COVID-19 Recovery Grants Program
The City of Armadale is pleased to launch its COVID-19 Recovery Grants Program – 2020/2021. The grants program will support community led programs and activities that are focused on reviving community services, promoting wellbeing and enabling the community to resume active, connected lives in a post COVID environment. Grants will range from $2000-5000. “Our City is fortunate to have some wonderful community organisations and volunteers providing a range of activities and projects,” said Mayor Ruth Butterfield.
24 Nov 2020 City welcomes start of METRONET Byford Rail Extension
The City of Armadale welcomes the State Government’s decision to add the proposed ‘viaduct’ option to the tender process for the METRONET extension to Byford. In November, the City wrote to the Transport and Planning Minister, Rita Saffioti, with details of a business case for the viaduct proposal. The business case set out the significant increase to the number of jobs, residential population, student numbers and private sector investment that would be catalysed in the City of Armadale by the viaduct (railroad) solution.
23 Nov 2020 Armadale Writers’ Award winners announced
Three budding writers from across Perth were awarded for their creative prose at the Armadale Writers’ Awards presentation, held on Friday, November 20. The annual competition, launched in 2017, was open to adult writers across the Perth metropolitan area and the wider Western Australian community. The winning entrants shared in a prize pool of $2600. City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield congratulated the winners on their creative pieces and thanked those from across Perth and Western Australia who entered the competition.

In a win for the people of Roleystone, the Cross Park Cricket and Netball Pavilion was officially opened on Friday, November 6 and is now ready to service the needs of sports lovers across the community.

30 Oct 2020 Community Liaison Officers get green light
Daily community liaison patrols will commence from Sunday, 1st November in the Jull Street Mall, following the appointment of Southern Cross Protection services. At an Ordinary Council Meeting, held in September, Council authorised additional operational expenditure from the 2020/2021 budget for security personnel who will provide customer services to visitors and the local community over the upcoming holiday period.
1 Oct 2020 Community update - 2020 Hawkers Markets and Christmas Parade
Based on the WA Government’s new directions for public events over 500 people, released on September 18, the City of Armadale has reluctantly made the decision to cancel the 2020 Hawkers Markets and Christmas Parade. The Hawkers Markets are held annually at Memorial Park, attracting approximately 2000 people per night, while the City’s Christmas Parade is held in the Jull Street Mall and precedes the Carols by Candlelight event in Memorial Park.

24 Sep 2020 Shared path connects cyclists and pedestrians
Stage 1 of a new $4.3 million pedestrian and bike path recently completed in Armadale will see numerous transport and wellbeing benefits and significantly improve connectivity and safety for the local community. The project, which was jointly funded by the State Government through the WA Bicycle Network Grants Program and the City of Armadale, provides a safer path for pedestrians and cyclists.
17 Sep 2020 Bedfordale Fire Station funding secured
Construction on the Bedfordale Fire Station will soon be underway after the City of Armadale Council endorsed a recommendation to draw on the City’s Freehold Sale Capital Works Reserve Fund to cover the shortfall. $248,000 will be allocated to the development and construction of the facility, expected to be operational by early 2021. Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the City was disappointed its request for additional Local Government Grant Scheme (LGGS) Capital Grants from Department Fire and Emergency Services was unsuccessful.

10 Sep 2020 Trees successfully relocated to Frye Park
The City of Armadale has successfully relocated six trees to Frye Park, brought on by the Metronet-driven Denny Avenue Level Crossing Removal project. As civil works progress towards the implementation of the level crossing for the Armadale train line, it was imperative that the City acted quickly to relocate several street trees.
9 Sep 2020 Perth Hills backdrop provides inspiration for artists
The stunning natural backdrop of the Perth Hills is the main inspiration behind Robert Walker and Ruth de Vos’ artwork, as they look forward to one of the City of Armadale’s premier Spring into Armadale events. They are just some of the local artists who will open their studio doors to the public during the Armadale Hills Open Studio Arts Trail that runs from Friday, 11 September – Sunday, 20 September.
7 Sep 2020 Winners announced: Armadale Young Writers’ Awards 2020
Fifteen local school aged writers were awarded for writing excellence at the 2020 Armadale Young Writers’ Awards presentation ceremony, held Friday, September 4, at the City of Armadale Administration Building. This year marked the 10th anniversary of the Armadale Young Writers’ Awards, which are held to encourage and recognise the writing creativity of young people across the City.

28 Jul 2020 New Inner-City TAFE Campus in Armadale
Dust off your notebooks and sharpen your pencils Armadale, because the City has just been announced as the home of a new state of the art TAFE facility!   The City of Armadale welcomes this week’s announcement made by Premier Mark McGowan on plans to construct a new inner city TAFE in Armadale. The new $22.6m Armadale campus will consolidate the campus in one, state of the art facility, which will enhance the opportunities available to locals to further their education and acquire additional skills and training.   
7 Jul 2020 City freezes rates and provides concessions
The City of Armadale acknowledges its role in the whole of government response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  To minimise the economic and social impacts on our community, the City of Armadale is freezing rate revenue for the 2020/2021 budget, meaning no rate payer will pay more than last year. According to Mayor Ruth Butterfield, as a result of Council action, 20,879 residents will have a decrease, and 16,311 residents that would otherwise have had an increase will be granted a concession to keep their rates the same as last year.

5 Jun 2020 Update on Federal funding
In May, the City of Armadale submitted a $150 million list of urgently needed projects that included community buildings, local roads and paths, for consideration of Federal economic stimulus funding, in the wake of COVID-19.  We recently received notification we will receive $953,448 toward eligible projects. The funding comes with a strict set of criteria, including the requirement that projects must be completed by June 30, 2021.

18 May 2020 City Launches ‘Localised’ platform
The City of Armadale is proud to launch ‘Localised’, a new online platform, specifically designed to support the City’s local business community. An initiative of the City of Armadale, in collaboration with the Business Armadale Chamber of Commerce, ‘Localised’ is available to all local businesses in the Armadale area, and is free to join and use. “A strong local economy is essential to supporting a vibrant community,” said Mayor Ruth Butterfield.
18 May 2020 National Award Winners – Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre (AFAC)
Continuing to exceed expectations, the Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre (AFAC) has taken out the Social and Community Infrastructure Award at the 2020 National Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) awards. The ceremony was held by virtual broadcast from Sydney on 12 May. Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the latest award is a testament to the innovative and high quality design of the facility. “Visitors are welcomed by the striking architecture, offset against the bushland setting. It’s an impressive facility which has proven extremely popular with our community.”

The City of Armadale will undertake a cautious and staged approach to re-opening its facilities. At this time, the Armadale Aquatic and Fitness Centre (AFAC), which includes pool facilities and fitness classes will remain closed.

While we might not be able to hug our mums or grandmothers at the moment, we can show our love in other ways.  Grab takeaway coffee and cake, or lunch from a local eatery and head to one of our wonderful parks for a picnic with your mum.
1 May 2020 City partners with Gwynne Park Primary School to deliver school activity packs
The City of Armadale has partnered with Gwynne Park Primary School this week to deliver school work packs to more than 2000 students in the Armadale area.    Gwynne Park Primary School Principal Sam Prodonovich was joined by Mayor Ruth Butterfield, Minnawarra Ward councillors Cr Gary Smith and Cr Kerry Busby and school staff on Tuesday morning.    The City donated stationary and activity packs as well as the provision of a City vehicle and a driver to support the school, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

28 Apr 2020 City funding supports Centre for Stories program
The City of Armadale has awarded the Centre for Stories a community grant to go towards an after-school storytelling program, ‘Stories for the Future.’ Founded in 2015 by John and Caroline Wood, the Centre for Stories is a vibrant, inclusive literary arts and cultural organisation. The ‘Stories for the Future’ program will be open to students from all colleges and senior high schools within the City of Armadale, and is designed to encourage participation from Aboriginal and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
28 Apr 2020 St Matthew’s Anglican Church awarded with Community Grant
The City of Armadale has awarded St Matthew’s Anglican Church a $5,000 Community Grant toward its Emergency Food Relief Program. The City’s 2019/2020 Community Grants Program is designed to support activities that enrich local communities, funding new initiatives and projects for non-profit and incorporated community groups. “St Matthew’s Anglican Church carries out extremely important work in our community and we are very pleased to be able to offer them this funding,” said City of Armadale Mayor, Ruth Butterfield.

21 Apr 2020 City re-engages casual workers to support community
The City of Armadale has been able to re-engage some casual staff from the Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre (AFAC) and Armadale Libraries to support community services in the City in the wake of COVID-19. With the AFAC centre and City libraries closed until further notice, a number of the City’s casual staff have been called upon to assist, delivering services to elderly and vulnerable residents. The City recently completed a skills audit to determine where its casual workforce could be redirected to provide frontline support and keep essential services running.

All essential and key services will remain operational at the City of Armadale – with most services transitioned to phone, online and digital platforms. Supporting directives from the Federal and State Governments, the City will close all community facilities to the public and those buildings that house administration staff, effective at midnight tonight. Services will still be provided to you, just in a different way.
