City of Armadale local Kayla Bongers has won first place in the secondary school category of Switch your thinking’s Young Re-inventor of the Year competition.

The 2020 Switch your thinking competition theme was Future Food, with entrants asked to submit their invention with photos and a brief description. Entries were judged on criteria including: relevance to the theme, waste reduction and practicality.

The 15-year-old from Kelmscott created a label for fruit which breaks down in water. The invention means that when the fruit is washed, the sticker disappears, avoiding lots of tiny apple stickers in the environment. She will receive a $1000 prize pack for her invention.

“I’d like to congratulate Kayla on her creation,” said City of Armadale Mayor, Ruth Butterfield.

“Reducing waste and waste education is one of the biggest challenges facing local governments and communities, so it was fantastic to see this level of innovation shown by a student.

“We all have a responsibility to reduce waste and improve environmental sustainability.”

Switch your thinking is an initiative of the City of Armadale, City of Gosnells and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale. Mayor Butterfield is Chairperson of the South East Regional Energy Group, which guides and implements the Switch your thinking program.
