Western Australia’s most talented public works professionals were recognised on Friday 13th March at an awards evening held in Fremantle, where the City of Armadale brought home gold in the Excellence in Innovation category for its Croydon Road Roleystone Rehabilitation project.

Also nominated was the Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre (AFAC) who also received a highly commended award in the Best Public Works Project category.

City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield said “I’m really proud of the team’s achievements. These awards showcase and celebrate excellence in the public works sector and for our team to be amongst the winners is a testament to their commitment to provide our community with modern and well thought out buildings and projects.”

The Croydon Road Roleystone Rehabilitation project brought home the win in Excellence in Innovation, recognising the quality and modern project implementation.

In a City first, the project used a new technology process of Foam Bitumen Stablisation (FBS), which involved combining a plant mix with bitumen to create a strong, durable and flexible pavement layer. The project also involved rehabilitating the existing road and footpaths in parallel with each other where over 1,000 tons of recycled material was used and existing vegetation preserved.

By using a stop and go system during the day to avoid road closures, businesses and residents were able to go about their daily activities. This key piece of infrastructure within the Roleystone area of the City provides residents with a safe and efficient road network.

AFAC was ‘highly commended’ in the Best Public Works Project greater $5m category. This category recognises excellence in design and construction of a significant public works infrastructure project that demonstrably benefits the community. Mayor Ruth Butterfield extended her congratulations to the City of Rockingham, whose Rockingham Beach Foreshore Revitalisation project was the category winner.

“It’s wonderful to see two WA councils recognised in this category. We have such a diverse community here in WA with a large amount of young families who value outdoor leisure and keeping fit with friends. AFAC’s huge outdoor area with free barbeques, crèche, indoor and outdoor pools and multiple fitness studios encourages the community to stay active” said Mayor Ruth Butterfield.

City of Armadale councillors Grant Nixon and Kerry Busby were in attendance to receive the awards.
