The City of Armadale has awarded the Centre for Stories a community grant to go towards an after-school storytelling program, ‘Stories for the Future.’

Founded in 2015 by John and Caroline Wood, the Centre for Stories is a vibrant, inclusive literary arts and cultural organisation.

The ‘Stories for the Future’ program will be open to students from all colleges and senior high schools within the City of Armadale, and is designed to encourage participation from Aboriginal and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

The workshops will be delivered by established WA writers Annabel Smith and Holden Sheppard and by acclaimed performance poet, theatre producer and actor Sukhjit K Kaur.

City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the City was delighted to support the ‘Stories for the Future’ program.

“To nurture the art of storytelling, whether written, recorded or performed is an important part of self expression” said Mayor Butterfield.

“The ‘Stories for the Future’ project will provide a rare opportunity for the City’s students to share stories and collaborate.”

‘Stories for the Future’ is the first after-school program of its kind run by the Centre for Stories, and founder Caroline Wood said she was excited by the opportunity with the City of Armadale.

“It’s really important that we give opportunities to people from under-represented and marginalised communities and this is one way for us to do that.

“If you look after the storyteller and empower them to share a story that they want to tell, then it will bring out the best in them.”

In the coming weeks, schools will be contacted by the Centre for Stories with more information. Due to the impacts of COVID-19, a number of options are being discussed for workshops, including using online video teleconferencing.
