Help improve biodiversity and the health of our treasured natural environment and go into the draw to win a Cockatube by signing up to the City of Armadale’s new Habitat Links program.

An expansion of the Streamcare program, Habitat Links allows eligible landowners that have natural areas of bush, watercourses or wetlands on their land to receive personalised technical advice from the City to revegetate their wetlands, bushland, and areas in between that could be used as a corridor for wildlife to travel to food and water sources.

City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield said landowners can play an important and rewarding role in conserving and improving our natural areas. By providing habitat links on their properties, landowners will be assisting native animals move around the landscape safely.

“Sadly Australia is second in the world for biodiversity loss, with most being attributable to habitat destruction.  Our natural environment provides habitat for a range of unique wildlife including black cockatoos, bobtail skinks, south western long necked turtles, quendas and wallabies, all of which need our help to conserve existing habitats. The creation of new habitats and ecological highways that connect bushland areas with wetlands and watercourses, are essential, if we want to preserve these species.”

Birds, reptiles, fish and insects need native trees, shrubs, grasses and other vegetation for food and shelter, so they use our natural areas as homes and highways to move around in search for food, water, shelter and breeding partners.

“Our community continually tells us that they feel our natural areas and wildlife are important to them.  Through programs such as Habitat Links, we can continue to work with landowners to preserve and improve remaining natural areas by assisting owners with native seedling species selection, planting techniques, weed management, feral animal management, creating wildlife habit, erosion management and environmental monitoring.”

Landowners can register their interest to participate in the program by emailing habitatlinks@armadale.wa.gov.au or phone 9394 5000.
