Local Artist Mary Jarrett has been named as the Festival Artist for the 2023 Armadale Arts Festival, which runs from Friday 5 May until Sunday 21 May.

Mary was selected as the Festival Artist by the Armadale Arts Festival Artist Panel for her commitment and dedication to artistic inspiration in the Armadale community.

Mary said that being chosen as the Festival Artist is a wonderful honour and a great opportunity to promote the Armadale Society of Artists (ASA) and all that it’s doing to nurture art in the local community.

“From an early age I have been interested in creating art in one form or another. I started by copying cartoon characters from comic books and was always getting told off for doodling on any piece of paper that I could find… and I must admit that I still do that.

“I met my husband while studying for an arts degree at night school and like so many others ‘life got in the way’ and art was put on the back burner.

“The need to create and get back to painting and my desire to experiment with water colour lead me to join ASA. I learnt from the many experienced artists in the society and the members who were always willing to share their knowledge. I became President in 2022 to carry on the good work done by so many Presidents before me. My main goal was to find us a permanent place that we could settle into and continue our classes, informal groups, and workshops for our members.”

Mayor Ruth Butterfield said Mary’s commitment to grow ASA as a friendly and inclusive art society promoting art and nurturing creativity in people of all ages and mediums, made her a great choice for appointment as the Armadale Arts Festival Artist for 2023.

“Working closely with the City, Mary was instrumental in obtaining new premises for ASA, located at the Armadale Arena, where they will host the inaugural Extensions exhibition as part of the 2023 Armadale Arts Festival,” said Mayor Butterfield.
