Release Date:
Tuesday, 20 June 2023

Come along and celebrate the City of Armadale’s free NAIDOC event, on Tuesday 4 July, when the Bob Blackburn Reserve is transformed into a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

The City’s NAIDOC celebrations are a free community event with live entertainment and activities for the whole family – everyone is welcome and it is a great chance to learn about, appreciate and celebrate Aboriginal culture.

The theme of this year’s NAIDOC Week is For Our Elders and will recognise the pivotal role Elders play as leaders of our communities. They have witnessed the many changes and they are a vital bridge between the modern world and Aboriginal culture.

City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield said recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, is at the heart of this year’s celebrations.

“This is a great opportunity for all our community to learn about this ancient culture, recognise the leadership role of local Aboriginal Elders and participate in the celebrations, which will include a traditional smoking ceremony to welcome everyone.

“NAIDOC week activities provide an opportunity to engage with our Aboriginal community and presents a learning experience which broadens our understanding of the richness of Aboriginal histories and culture. The event aims to promote respect and celebrate the diversity of cultures and achievements of Aboriginal people in our community,” said Mayor Butterfield.

The Champion Centre is a gathering place for Aboriginal people, with the delivery of activities and programs in the Aboriginal way by the City’s Aboriginal Development Team. The team works alongside the local community to share knowledge and build bridges between community and services. The centre’s reputation continues to flourish with many recognising it as one of Armadale’s pillar community facilities.

The event will be held a Bob Blackburn Reserve, Seville Grove from 10am to 3pm. For more information call 9394 5000.
