The 19th annual Watch Around Water Week has kicked off at the Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre (AFAC). This event runs from Monday 11 December 2023 – Sunday 17 December 2023.

Watch Around Water Week is an awareness event aimed at reminding the public about safety in aquatic centres, and is a joint initiative between Royal Life Saving WA and The Leisure Institute of Western Australia Aquatics (LIWA). The event begun in WA in 2004 and is now featured in over 350 aquatic centres across Australia.

Watch Around Water Week encourages the use of safety practices and parental/guardian supervision of young children around pools. AFAC will be hosting activities throughout the week, to support awareness and education of pool safety.

At AFAC, all children under the age of six must be within arm's reach at all times, and children under the age of 11 must be actively supervised by a persons aged 17 or older.

There have been no drowning deaths of young children at public swimming pools in WA since the program’s inception in 2004.

Mayor Ruth Butterfied said: “Watch Around Water Week is an important reminder of water safety, as we head into the Summer holidays. We are pleased to support the initiative at AFAC, and want to use this as an opportunity to ensure everyone keeps this front of mind when they are around the water, as a child can drown in less than 20 seconds”.

More information about Watch Around Water Week can be found at the Royal Life Saving WA website.
