Armadale Aspire 2019 underway

The annual Armadale Aspire program kicked off at the end of July. Another group of inspiring local high school students started their Armadale Aspire journey at Beaver Tree Services.

Paul Harrison, owner and managing director, gave an inspirational talk and an engaging tour of his business for the group of young people.

The Aspire program runs for 1 day a week over 7 weeks and gives local students an insight into the different jobs available in Armadale, along with building their confidence for entering the workforce, helping them broaden their horizons and develop their careers.

On the second day of the program, students visited the new Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre (AFAC), to find out about the various career options available in the facility and to experience the diverse work that the AFAC team do.

The City is proud to support these inspiring and community focused businesses involved in Aspire. If this is something you would like your business to be involved in next year, please email info@armadale.wa.gov.au.

Metronet Update - Contractors wanted to deliver the project

Expressions of interest are being sought for the final design and construction for the removal of the Denny Avenue level crossing in Kelmscott. Two design and construct contracts – one for the rail and bridge works and the other for the road and civic infrastructure - are expected to be awarded later this year. Both contractors will work collaboratively with the Public Transport Authority to manage the interface between the works.

This is a great opportunity for local employment and construction, and supply chain businesses are encouraged to register their business on the Capability Register on the METRONET website. Once the contract is awarded later this year, the project will move into the next phase which will confirm the design, construction methods, and identify other impacts to residents.

Did you know that the Denny Avenue level crossing removal has a community Facebook group? The group is designed to update the community on project milestones, construction impacts or general project updates. It’s a forum for interaction, discussion, commentary and questions between the community and METRONET.

For more information on METRONET’s level crossing removal program, visit the METRONET website.

Plastic free steps for businesses

Plastic Free July has just finished. As a business did you take part and how did you do so?

There are many ways for businesses to go ‘plastic free’. Getting rid of plastics from your business’ everyday practices can make a huge impact and it’s easy to do with a few small changes. To find out how you can do so, visit plasticfreejuly.org.

Many businesses find that amending their procurement policies is a powerful way to reduce single-use plastics (see the procurement card for ideas). This might include asking suppliers to pack without plastic, and requesting reusable, returnable or sustainable packaging such as recycled cardboard boxes or ‘jackets’ to replace plastic wrap on pallets.

A local butcher that is helping to reduce waste is The Butchers Hook. Customers are encouraged to bring their own containers to reduce the need for plastic bags and wrapping. Small steps like this can have a large positive impact for the environment and reduce landfill.

If you are a business that is helping to tackle the waste problem we would love to hear from you and promote your initiative. Send your initiatives to info@armadale.wa.gov.au.

WA Economy Status

The Western Australian economy grew by 1.9 per cent in 2017-18, following six years of declining growth that ended in a contraction of 1.8 per cent in 2016-17.

The slowdown in the economy was mainly due to the completion of major LNG projects, halving the value of business investment.

The slowdown in the mining boom has led to total employment falling in both 2015-16 and 2016-17.

A small increase in business investment in 2017-18 and an improved investment outlook is now supporting jobs growth. To sustain this, activity will need to broaden across a range of sectors in the economy.

Sectors which are growing in jobs include retail and wholesale trade (up 33,144) and business and property services (up 23,390), which had the largest increases through the year.

Local Builder set to pedal 700kms for Local Men's Restoration House

Alita Constructions Director, Alastair Kleyn (Ali), is set to pedal 700kms in September to raise vital funds to support local not for profit, Pindari Men’s Restoration House.

The challenging five-day long ride will include 9000 metres of elevation starting at Bunbury and going through Busselton, Nannup, Ferguson Valley, Waroona, and finishing at Pindari in Armadale.

Pindari helps men who are determined to end their cycle of addiction, homelessness, poverty, chronic anxiety and other dysfunctional behaviours.

Ali states, “Pindari is very close to my heart. I am passionate about being another spoke in the wheel in helping restore men’s lives who are caught up in destructive life choices”.

As an amateur bike rider, Ali believes that this bike ride (including all the early morning training in the dark) will really push his mental and physical boundaries.

“Having the discipline to get up on those cold dark early mornings and pushing myself mentally and physically, will give me a little bit of understanding of the courage and the amount of mental, emotional and physical journey a person living in addiction needs to go through to be fully restored back into fullness of life,” Ali says.

Pindari is 100% privately funded and is open to anybody in the community who needs and wants help. Money raised will assist with vital funds to meet budgets and provide services needed to support men.

“It has been two years since I participated in the last Pindari bike ride fundraiser and it certainly pushed my limits. As this year’s ride is going to be even harder, I aim to double what I raised in the 2017 ride and I have set my 2019 target at $10,000. Any contribution is valued and greatly appreciated.”
