Each year the City of Armadale's Bushcare Environmental Working Group (BEWG) hosts plenary sessions on covering a range of environmental topics.

Each year the City of Armadale hosts two plenary sessions, this year on behalf of the Bushcare Environmental Working Group (BEWG) and the Armadale Gosnells Landcare Group (AGLG) and in partnership with Birdlife Australia, we are hosting a workshop about the Great Cocky Count.

During plenary sessions the community can hear from various experts who are informative and passionate presenters on topics of interest, including wildlife conservation and rehabilitation.

Great Cocky Count Plenary 1 2024

The first BEWG plenary for this year will be “Black Cockatoos - Great Cocky Count.”  They’ve been making a bit of noise lately so it’s time to listen to our most fascinating feathered friends. These socially sophisticated creatures are an integral part of the Australian ecosystem and endemic to the South-west of WA.

So spread your wings and join us for an information session all about our charismatic southwest black-cockatoos, the annual Great Cocky Count, and how you can get involved!

The Great Cocky Count is a long-term citizen science survey and the biggest single survey for black-cockatoos in Western Australia. During one night in autumn, volunteers monitor and count black-cockatoos as they arrive at dusk to roost at known sites.

Records submitted from across the southwest provide a snapshot of threatened black-cockatoo populations, and over time this has helped us quantify the changes in their numbers.

During this workshop, participants will learn about the three species of black-cockatoos in southwest WA, their identification, biology, ecology, behaviour, threats, how to get involved with the survey and what else you can do to help black-cockatoos in your neighbourhood.

There will be an opportunity for questions and answers with Birdlife Australia at the end of the presentation.

Bookings are essential for catering purposes. This is a ticketed event through Humanitix. If you have trouble registering please contact us and we can register on your behalf.
