Community Scorecard Results

Continuing our story on the Community Scorecard results in last month’s edition, the future priorities the community asked us to focus on are areas the City has already been working on. This shows previous research, which guided the City’s priorities, set us on the right path and that the community still cares about the same things.

These include:

Maintaining streetscapes

Our dedicated parks teams ensures our parks and reserves across the City are maintained to a high standard, including a dedicated parks team for the City Centre. Through the Urban Forest Strategy we have planted 850 trees this financial year. Residents can take advantage of our education programs and free native plants to help maintain their own streetscapes.

Value for money

We’re continually reviewing operations to look for savings. This year we focused on reducing operational costs to provide a rates increase less than the metro average.

In the next six months Council will be focused on reviewing our Long Term Financial Plan to see how else we can make your rates go further.

Economic Development

Our advocacy and lobbying resulted in the State Government committing $86 million to build a state-of-the-art justice complex in the City of Armadale.

The new complex will almost triple the number of courtrooms and accommodate around 315 police officers, a dramatic increase on the 80 officers currently working from the police station.

A commitment has also been made for it to be manned 24 hours a day. The City is committed to leading development of Armadale as it grows to the full potential of a metropolitan regional centre.

Anti-social behavior and Community Safety

In order to better understand these types of issues, we have recently engaged with seven individual suburbs to get the details of the concerns. Together with WA Police and other organisations we will develop community development strategies on how best the City can play a role in creating safer communities.

Kelmscott Hall reopened

The Kelmscott Hall was officially reopened after a $2.1 million refurbishment last month.

Representatives from various sporting clubs, the Kelmscott Agricultural Society, builders, architects, staff and councillors attended a small reopening ceremony, along with students from Kelmscott Primary School who held their first school assembly in the hall since its refurbishment.

The works were completed on time and on budget and included a new entrance reception area, River Road façade, front and rear veranda, upgrades to changerooms and toilets including internal and external access, an additional lesser hall, upgrades to the kitchen and equipment, floor replacement, new air conditioning and lighting to accommodate for badminton, table tennis and Civic events, and noise insulation to improve acoustics.

AFAC scoop the prize-pool

Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre (AFAC) won the Parks & Leisure Australia’s Community Facility of the Year Award for WA at the recent Awards of Excellence.

The community facility award recognises facilities that demonstrate innovative features of design, development and operation. AFAC outswam close competition from the City of Rockingham for their Autumn Centre and the City of Stirling for Scarborough Beach Pool, and is now shortlisted for the National Community Facility of the Year Award which will be announced in October.

This award couldn't have been achieved without the support of our incredible community and the over 5,000 members of the Centre. We can't thank you all enough.

Armadale Library extension

The exciting extension of Armadale Library will give residents an opportunity to develop their creative skills, undertake group study, or bring their own devices and work outside of the office.

The new area boasts two rooms with high end audio and video equipment which can also be used to record podcasts, vlogs, presentations and other videos. There are also study spaces and informal meeting areas where users can give presentations, or work collaboratively.

Training sessions will be on offer to help users become familiar with how the equipment works. The Armadale library is located in the Armadale Shopping Centre, Orchard Avenue, Armadale. For more information contact the Library on 9394 5125.

The morning will kick off with a RPM launch at 8.30am, followed by the Mega Launch at 9.30am which will feature all of the remaining programs. The launch is a great way for members and the wider community to get a taste of group fitness classes that they may not have tried before, without having to commit to a full class.

The AFAC team believe that fitness should be fun and when we exercise with family and friends, it can be even more so. Members are encouraged to bring a friend or family member along to the event. Members can collect a free pass to the event for their plus-one from group fitness instructors, or the customer service team.

The event is guaranteed to provide plenty of fun and entertainment with special appearances from the centre’s mascot Arry, as well as prizes for the best active green outfits. There will be awesome spot prizes on the day too! At the end of the day participants will be treated to free healthy smoothies from the City of Armadale’s blender bike.
