The City of Armadale’s community children’s book celebrating diversity was recently recognised by the Public Health Advocacy Institute’s Local Government Policy Awards. The Proud Children community book was jointly commended in the Diversity, Inclusion or Multicultural Child and Young Persons Health category of the 2021 Local Government Policy Awards.
14 Dec 2021 2022 Armadale Arts Festival – Call out for Community Driven Arts Projects
The City of Armadale is calling for community driven arts projects to be part of the 2022 Armadale Arts Festival. The festival will run from 29 April to 15 May 2022 across the Armadale district. Community arts groups are invited to submit ideas, arts activities, workshops and/or events to be part of the festival and leverage the opportunity for additional marketing support and promotion of your group to new audiences.
3 Dec 2021 AFAC Promotes Vigilance for Watch Around Water Week
The Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre (AFAC) urges parents to be vigilant while their children enjoy any of the five public pools in the centre. While AFAC promotes water safety messages year round, the centre is stepping up its efforts for Watch Around Water Week from Monday 6 – Sunday 12 December to raise awareness of the importance of parental supervision in public pools.
3 Dec 2021 Act Belong Commit in the City of Armadale
The City of Armadale has partnered with Mentally Healthy WA to promote the Act Belong Commit campaign and its messages to encourage and promote good mental health and wellbeing throughout the community. The Act Belong Commit campaign encourages people to take action to improve and protect their mental health and wellbeing, promotes good mental health strategies at both the individual and community level, and encourages the creation of supportive environments for good mental health in schools, workplaces, and community groups.

30 Nov 2021 Snapping History – Get Ready for Armadale’s FOCUS Photographic Competition
Calling all amateur photographers to grab your cameras and help us capture Armadale’s changing face! Our annual local history photographic competition is now in its seventh year and offers amateur photographers over 18 years a chance to showcase their photography skills. Hosted by Birtwistle Local Studies Library, the competition aims to capture present day historical reality. Historians enjoy seeing every detail of a scene, so the challenge for photographers is to balance their artistic flair and technique with faithful accuracy.
24 Nov 2021 The City of Armadale is investing in solar energy in its push to become greener.
The City of Armadale has an ambitious carbon reduction target of net zero emissions by 2030. Council adopted the City’s Corporate Greenhouse Action Plan in September 2021 which recommends a significant level of investment in solar energy. Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the City is joining a growing group of Councils showing leadership on this important issue. “Using renewable energy for our major buildings is a significant move to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Mayor Butterfield.
22 Nov 2021 Winners of the Armadale Writers’ Award announced!
Winners of this year’s Armadale Writers’ Award were announced at a presentation at Armadale Library on Friday 19 November. The competition in its fifth year, has a prize pool of $2,600, and was open to adult writers living in Western Australia. This year over 100 entries were received from writers around the state. Councillor Grant Nixon presented the awards and said it was exciting to see how much the competition has grown since its inception.

15 Nov 2021 Gwynne Park Ramps Up
Gwynne Park Skate Park is an exciting new youth facility that will open to the public on Thursday 18th November with a free sausage sizzle and community skating workshop run by The Skateboarding Project. City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the redevelopment at Gwynne Park, cost at approximately $850,000, and came after extensive consultation with the community and local skate enthusiasts.
2 Nov 2021 Working Towards a Healthy Community
The City of Armadale recently released the Community Health and Wellbeing Plan 2021-2024 (CHWP). This three year strategic plan provides a frame work to contribute to improving health and wellbeing outcomes for residents to enable people to live well and experience the best possible quality of life. The CHWP has been developed to meet the amendment (Part 5) to the Public Health Act 2016 and public health planning recommendations from the Department of Health.

20 Oct 2021 Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre - A Big Winner
Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre (AFAC) was awarded the Multi-service Business of the Year for 2021 by Fitness Australia, the peak association for the Australian fitness industry. Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the award recognises the City of Armadale’s commitment to the provision of top quality facilities in order to encourage the community be more active and AFAC’s commitment to excellence. The award is also one of the most prestigious awards in the industry.

The City of Armadale will welcome five new Councillors and two returning Councillors following the Local Government elections on Saturday 16 October. Seven vacancies for the City of Armadale, each with a four year term were filled in the following wards: Michael Hancock - Heron Ward; Scott Mosey - Hills Ward; Sam Singh Virk- Lake Ward; Gary Smith - Minnawarra Ward; Paul Hetherington - Palomino Ward; Keyur Kamdar- Ranford Ward; and Ruth Butterfield - River Ward.

The City of Armadale assures residents that fire and emergency services are covered for the Roleystone area following Council’s resolution last night on the long-running debate about the future of fire services for Roleystone. Council was requested to take urgent action as this complex matter had just become too big for the brigades to handle on their own. “The community’s safety has and always will be a priority for the City of Armadale, and arrangements are in place to deal with emergency and fire events,” said Chief Executive Officer Joanne Abbiss.

The Noongar season of Kambarang was celebrated during the Kambarang Festival at the City of Armadale’s Bob Blackburn Reserve in Seville Grove on Tuesday 12 October. “The Kambarang Festival is an opportunity to join together to respect and celebrate the diversity of our community as we welcome in the season of Kambarang,” said Deputy-Mayor Carole Frost. “It was encouraging to see the growing number of non-Aboriginal people attending the City’s Kambarang Festival which can help broaden people’s understanding of Aboriginal culture and their relationship with the land.”
4 Oct 2021 A Wee Bit of Scotland in the Heart of Armadale
Minnawarra Park in the heart of Armadale was transformed into a wee bit of Scotland over the weekend when around 20,000 people enjoyed the Scottish-themed Armadale Highland Gathering and Perth Kilt Run. Every year, the City of Armadale celebrates all things Scottish at the City’s unique family friendly event which attracts Scottish and non-Scottish festival goers from across the state.

The City of Armadale is encouraging residents and ratepayers to ensure they participate in this year’s Local Government elections by voting. 7 Sep 2021 Winners of the City of Armadale’s Young Writers’ Award Announced
The City of Armadale recognised 15 local school-aged writers at a presentation for the winners of the Young Writers’ Awards on Friday, 3 September. The young writers, ranging from school years 3 to 12, were recognised for their creativity, imagination, and writing ability across a variety of written entries. The competition ran for the month of June with a competitive 231 entries received. City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield presented the awards at a ceremony attended by the judges, guest speaker and author, Kate McCaffrey, the award winners, and their families.

The charity run is part of the City of Armadale’s Highland Gathering celebrating all things Scottish and Australia’s only fun run done in a kilt. “The Armadale Highland Gathering and Perth Kilt Run are premier events for the city attracting large crowds from Armadale and across the greater Perth region,” said Mayor Ruth Butterfield.

An exhibition showcasing some of the best contemporary artworks by young artists across Perth will be held at the Armadale District Hall from Saturday, 7 August to Sunday, 15 August 2021, from 11am to 4pm. The exhibition is the culmination of works for the Outside the Frame Art Awards featuring around 40 thought-provoking works, sharing current trends and ideas from student artists in years 11 and 12.

16 Jul 2021 Avon Descent and City of Armadale to partner for launch of August festival month
The Avon Descent is back in 2021 for its 48th year, with a new look “festival month” kicking off with a new community event in partnership with the City of Armadale. Northam’s Avon Descent Association and the City of Armadale are proudly partnering in 2021 for the launch of a new community festival day on the 1st of August held at the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre. This international-standard sporting facility situated in the City of Armadale will host an event celebrating community, volunteering and sport in a single exciting day.
5 Jul 2021 Extraordinary Election Results
The City of Armadale welcomes newly elected Cr John Keogh following the City’s Extraordinary Election held on Saturday 3 July. Cr Keogh will fill the vacancy left by former River Ward Councillor Hugh Jones, who resigned earlier this year after being elected as the Member for Darling Range in the State Government election in March. The Extraordinary Election was run by postal vote through the Western Australian Electoral Commission, and the City’s CEO Joanne Abbiss thanked the returning officer and staff for the manner in which the election was conducted.

21 Jun 2021 Request for the City to handover its Bush Fire Brigade to DFES
In April a request was received from the Roleystone Volunteer Fire Brigade to handover the City’s Bush Fire Brigade in Roleystone to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES). The City has not made a decision on this but will be considering a report on the matter at its Corporate Services Committee meeting on Tuesday 22 June. The report will then be considered by the full Council on Monday 28 June.

24 May 2021 Winners Snap Up Photography Prizes
The anticipation is over with Saturday afternoon’s announcement of the City of Armadale’s annual FOCUS Photography competition winners.  Launched in February and in its sixth year, FOCUS was open to all amateur photographers and this year the competition saw just shy of 100 entries across the two prize categories. 
17 May 2021 Calling local young authors to enter the Armadale Young Writers’ Awards
The City of Armadale is once again calling on aspiring young writers in the community to put pen to paper and enter the Armadale Young Writers’ Awards. This year marks the 11th anniversary of the Armadale Young Writers’ Awards, which are held to encourage and recognise the writing creativity of young people across the City. Entries for the online competition open on Tuesday 1 June and close on Wednesday 30 June 2021. The competition is open to students in Years 3 to 12 who reside, or attend school in the City of Armadale. 
17 May 2021 Two Waterwise Awards for the City of Armadale
In a Local Government first, the City of Armadale has been awarded ‘Gold Star’ status under the Waterwise Building Program for its management of water use within the Orchard House building. The program acknowledges the efforts of the City and its ongoing commitment to water efficiency to achieve a significant reduction in water use.

12 May 2021 WA Day Fireworks Extravaganza
Celebrate our great state on WA Day on Monday, 7 June 2021.  Minnawarra Park is set to be transformed into fair grounds as part of the City of Armadale’s WA Day plans. Commencing from 4pm on WA Day, the City is putting on a family friendly, smoke and alcohol free event with performances by local and guest artists, amongst a variety of other activities for all ages.  A selection of cuisines will be available for purchase from food vans. Heading into the evening, and commencing at 6pm, a fireworks extravaganza will light up the night sky.
4 May 2021 Home sweet home for Bedfordale Volunteer Bushfire Brigade
Bedfordale Volunteer Bushfire Brigade officially have a new home, after the City of Armadale handed over the keys to the new facility on Admiral Road, Bedfordale. The 1.7 million dollar purpose-built building is designed to better facilitate the brigade’s growing membership base and well-equipped to help with major incidents.  The facility was funded by the City of Armadale, Department of Fire and Emergency Services ($372,000 Emergency Services Levy Grant Scheme) and the Bedfordale Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, who committed $54,400.
4 May 2021 Movement at the station: Elevated rail a reality
The City of Armadale welcomes the additional funding provided by the Australian Government and is delighted with the State Government’s decision to use $110m in additional funding towards the Byford rail extension, which will include the construction of an elevated rail (or viaduct) in Armadale.

In line with State Government directives, the City of Armadale will implement interim restrictions as part of a cautious approach to reopening facilities from midnight tonight.
23 Apr 2021 COVID Lockdown Arrangements: City of Armadale
In line with WA Government and Department of Health directives, a three-day lockdown will be in place for the Perth and Peel region from tonight. Council Administration, Orchard House, Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre, Champion Centre, Perth Hills Armadale Visitor Centre, History House Museum as well as Armadale, Seville Grove and Kelmscott Libraries, and the Armadale Landfill and Recycling Facility, will remain closed to the public. There will be no changes to recycling and bin services.

If you live in or are an owner or occupier of rateable property in the River Ward within the City of Armadale, you may be eligible to be enrolled to vote in the local government extraordinary election to be held on Saturday, 3 July 2021. 16 Apr 2021 City to deliver Small Business Friendly Approvals Program
The City of Armadale has been selected as one of 21 local governments to undertake a new program designed to streamline approval processes for small businesses. The Small Business Friendly Approvals Program will make it easier to start, operate and grow a business within Western Australia, enabling a smoother transition between businesses and local government to access business permits and licences. The program is funded by the WA Government, which aims to accelerate regulatory reform to boost economic recovery amongst small business affected by the impact of COVID-19.
16 Apr 2021 Julie Fearns-Pheasant honoured by recognition as 2021 Armadale Arts Festival Artist
Local Artist Julie Fearns-Pheasant has had her contribution to the arts and arts practise formally recognised, awarded the 2021 Festival Artist title by the Armadale Arts Festival Artist Panel. The City’s annual Arts Festival will kick off from Friday 30 April through to Friday 16 May, where Fearns-Pheasant will take the reins as an official ambassador. Originally arriving in Armadale as a migrant with her family as a child, she returned to the City in 1999 to settle in the area with her own family.
12 Apr 2021 City to give away over 8,000 native seedlings to residents
The City of Armadale will be giving away over 8,000 native seedlings to residents on Saturday, 8 May, at Minnawarra Park. The City’s annual Native Plants for Residents initiative will help residents reduce water costs and control pests, as these plants prefer local conditions, overall helping to achieve a healthy garden. Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the event will help residents revamp their gardens and receive advice on improving their garden in time for Spring.

The local arts scene in Armadale will take the spotlight in late April and early May when the City of Armadale hosts the Armadale Arts Festival. The festival is built on the strong arts and cultural community in Armadale, and celebrates art in its many forms with more than 50 events over 17 days at 20 plus venues throughout the City. The unique community event showcases the incredible local talent from the region.
12 Apr 2021 Kelmscott Cenotaph 100th Anniversary
This year marks the Centenary of the War Memorial at Rushton Park in Kelmscott.  One hundred years ago, the stone obelisk was built in honour of residents from Kelmscott, Roleystone and Karragullen who fought in the First World War and records the names of those service women and men who lost their lives in the conflict.      Major General Sir Talbot Hobbs laid the first stone of the foundations on 21st May 1921, with the completed structure being unveiled by His Excellency Sir Francis Newdegate, Governor of Western Australia on the 29th May 1921.

For local musician and producer, Dylan Monk, the Armadale Arts Festival has created a platform for the City’s music scene to thrive. Dylan is responsible for programming and contracting bands for Far Out Fest as part of the City’s Armadale Arts Festival, which runs from April 30-May 16.

29 Mar 2021 Gardens flourish as part of green initiative
For Merise Blackburn, taking part in the City’s Native Plants for Residents initiative has not only transformed her garden, but also helped save on water costs and increased habitat for birds and other fauna. Since moving to Kelmscott in 2018, Merise said her family have benefitted from the City’s annual free plants and seedlings giveaway. “Our experience has been extremely positive,” she said. “We have always found it well organised and found the range and plant selection to be excellent, even when arriving a few hours after the event commenced.

22 Feb 2021 FREE Family Movies in March
Movies in March is back for 2021. Bring a rug, pillow and some snacks, and settle in with your family, a mate, or a date for the City of Armadale’s free family outdoor cinema experience in the park. We’ll even throw in the popcorn for free! This much loved event will kick off on Friday, 5th March 2021 with Pokemon Detective Pikachu at Sheaf Park, Harrisdale. Pre-movie activities will begin from 5pm, with several community information stalls, including the Multicultural Communities Council of WA.
15 Feb 2021 COVID-19 Recovery Grant supports Classic Sounds Orchestra
The City of Armadale has awarded Classic Sounds Orchestra $5,000 in funding as part of the City’s COVID-19 Recover Grants Program, designed to support community groups impacted in the wake of COVID-19. Classic Sounds Orchestra formed in 2006. Now based at the Churchman Brook Community Centre, the Association supports four rehearsing groups (two orchestras, a brass ensemble and a fiddle group) of diverse age groups and abilities.
5 Feb 2021 Restrictions eased as City facilities re-open
In line with State Government directives, the City of Armadale will begin to re-open its facilities from Saturday, 6 February.  Under the transition plan there are several new restrictions, a maximum of 150 people will now be allowed to gather at venues and 20 people in private gatherings (one person per 4m2) across the Perth metropolitan and Peel regions. All City facilities will reopen, with limits on capacities.  The following facilities will reopen with capacity limits and some restrictions in place.

31 Jan 2021 State Lockdown Arrangements: City of Armadale
In line with WA Government and Department of Health directives, the City has closed its public facilities until 6pm Friday 5 February 2021. The Council Administration, Orchard House, Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre, Champion Centre, Tourism Centre, History House Museum, Armadale, Seville Grove and Kelmscott Libraries, Roleystone Green Waste Facility and the Armadale Landfill and Recycling Facility will all be closed to the public this week.
28 Jan 2021 Novelli Pavilion opens to the public
Novelli Pavilion was officially opened today (Thursday, 28 January), with the facility providing a new space for sporting groups and community groups across the wider Piara Waters community. The new Pavilion features a 100 square metre multi-purpose function room, unisex change rooms, a kitchen/kiosk, verandah and car parking area. As part of the first stage of the Novelli Reserve development, the playing fields at Novelli Park were completed in December 2018.
22 Jan 2021 City welcomes new citizens on Australia Day
The City of Armadale welcomed 51 new citizens on Tuesday, January 26 as part of its Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony. The conferees from 13 countries, including the United Kingdom (10 new citizens), Philippines (8), India (7) and Liberia (4) became Australian citizens, in a ceremony held at the Armadale District Hall. “Each year we welcome new Australians to our growing community as part of Australia Day celebrations,” said City of Armadale Mayor, Ruth Butterfield.
