The City of Armadale’s community children’s book celebrating diversity was recently recognised by the Public Health Advocacy Institute’s Local Government Policy Awards.
The Proud Children community book was jointly commended in the Diversity, Inclusion or Multicultural Child and Young Persons Health category of the 2021 Local Government Policy Awards.
The book was a collaborative project between the City of Armadale and the local community, and is part of the wider Proud Children Project which invited children to use their imaginations, reflect on themselves, and improve literacy levels. Children from diverse backgrounds feature in their own story and see themselves represented in the pages of the book. The book written in English, includes linguistically diverse words from languages such as Tamil, Korean, Filipino, Chinese, Gujarati, and Urdu, and features children from diverse backgrounds.
The Proud Children Project facilitated community storytelling, and offered children opportunities to see themselves in the world, while at the same time, strengthening culture, language, and literacy.
Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the City of Armadale’s work to empower communities led to the development of a multicultural advisory group. The group raises concerns, shares ideas, and works with the City of Armadale to build a more cohesive and inclusive community.
“Receiving a commendation for the Proud Children community book in the Diversity, Inclusion or Multicultural Child and Young Persons Health category of the 2021 Local Government Policy Awards is a significant achievement for the Proud Children Project and recognition of the City’s efforts to grow a sense of belonging in the community,” said Mayor Butterfield.
The Local Government Policy Awards were developed to illustrate the important role that Local Governments play in fostering happy and healthy children and young people.
