Winners of this year’s Armadale Writers’ Award were announced at a presentation at Armadale Library on Friday 19 November.

The competition in its fifth year, has a prize pool of $2,600, and was open to adult writers living in Western Australia. This year over 100 entries were received from writers around the state.

Councillor Grant Nixon presented the awards and said it was exciting to see how much the competition has grown since its inception.

“The entries were of an exceptionally high standard and it’s great to see people sharing their writing through the competition,” said Cr Nixon.

Cr Nixon said the Armadale Writers’ Award acknowledges excellence in writing while also cultivating Western Australian writing talent.

Author Laurie Steed hosted an online writing workshop earlier this year which not only gave writing tips, but also focussed on aspects to consider when writing for a competition.

Laurie was the MC for the private award presentation which was attended by council dignitaries, judges, award finalists and their families.

Winners: Amanda Beckett (1st prize), Sam Cecins (2nd prize), and Nadia Heisler (3rd prize). Finalists (in alphabetical order): Barry Divola, Carolyn Richer, K.A. Dunn, Katie Webster, Barry Morley, Richard Montgomery and Ros Thomas.

Winning stories will be available to read on the library website from Monday 22 November 2021.
