Everyone is welcome to attend the Korean War memorial service on Saturday 10 May at the Gerald Russell Park, Vermilion Boulevard, Hilbert.
The service will start at 2.30pm and all are welcome to place a wreath at the memorial, in remembrance of our defence forces, past and present.
The march gathers at 2pm, when the flag bearers, Veterans, Servicemen and personnel fall-in and march to the memorial at Gerald Russell Park.
Mayor Henry Zelones said that he is honoured to lay a wreath, on behalf of the City of Armadale, in remembrance of those who fought and died during the Korean War.
“There are 339 Australians who died during the war and we pay tribute to them on this day.
“In Australia we sometimes call the Korean War the ‘Forgotten War’ and yet Australia committed 17,000 troops when the war started on June 25, 1950.
“Gerald Russell Park where the memorial service is held was dedicated to Private Gerald William Russell, who served with the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment.
“Jerry, as he was fondly called, was only 21 years of age when he was killed in action by mortar fire that targeted his observation post.
“He was a local man with strong links to the Hilbert area and spent a lot of time by the Wungong River is his early years.
“It is important that we all take a moment to remember young men like Jerry who served our country during this conflict, and all wars that followed.
“Many of our veterans may now be gone but they will never be forgotten - as they remain an integral part of what it means to be Australian,” said Mayor Zelones.
Light refreshments will be provided after the service.
