Throughout the year the City of Armadale will host a series of Positive Ageing Forums at the Armadale Library, to engage older community members.
Mayor Henry Zelones said ageing is often associated with many rewarding experiences; however it is also a time when significant changes might occur.
“There are many strategies available to help prevent, delay or manage some of the physical, psychological, social and personal challenges people face as they age. These strategies can enable longer and healthier lives and allow participants to enjoy a greater quality of life.
“Making choices and having control over important aspects of your life, maintaining a positive attitude and feeling good about yourself, keeping fit and healthy and engaging fully in life as you age is particularly important. This allows you to continue to feel good and have a sense of control as you face a new phase of the life cycle”, said Mayor Zelones.
The forums will be held every month from February through to November and will cover topics such as safety and security, health, activities for seniors and other useful and interesting information.
The first forum will be held on Wednesday 5 February from 1.30 to 4pm. The first presentation will be ‘The importance of exercise, movement and staying healthy as we get older.’ The presentation will cover the effects of exercise on your mind, body and soul.
The second presentation ‘Speak Out about Diabetes’ commences at 2.30pm and will deliver a broad diabetes awareness and prevention message covering areas such as:
- What is diabetes and why is it serious?
- The impact diabetes is having and will have on our community.
- The risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes.
- How to prevent type 2 diabetes.
- Where to go for further information and the role of Diabetes WA.
Afternoon tea will be provided along with information relating to exercise groups and programs which operate within the Armadale region. For further information and to RSVP contact Armadale Library on 9399 0125.
