Throughout the year the City of Armadale has hosted monthly Positive Ageing Sessions. Covering a diverse range of topics from safety and security to health, the sessions are designed to engage older members of the community.
The next session will be held during Mental Health Week at the Armadale Library on Wednesday 8 October from 1.30 to 4pm. The first presentation will be ‘I Have Memories’.
Mental Health Week raises community awareness about mental health issues. It aims to provide strategies to strengthen the social and emotional wellbeing of communities, families and individuals.
Dr Frans Hugo, Consultant Psychiatrist from Armadale Health Service - Older Adult Mental Health Unit, will discuss issues associated with memory loss and diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
Mayor Henry Zelones said the session will be informative for people who would like to learn how to improve their memory skills.
“The presenter will discuss the difference between remembering events and our knowledge of facts, how we make memories and other related topics.
“The second session ‘Living with Dementia’ commences at 3pm with a representative from Alzheimer’s Australia who will provide information on the main types and causes of dementia.
“Participants will hear some interesting ideas on how to approach a person living with dementia, how to communicate better with dementia sufferers and some other useful information to understand this debilitating disease,” said Mayor Zelones.
Light refreshments will be provided. Bookings are essential as numbers are limited. Call 9399 0125.
