NAIDOC Week
Release Date:
Monday, 27 June 2022

The City’s NAIDOC week celebrations are going virtual with a number of sessions live streaming from the Champion Centre from 3-10 July.

This year’s theme Get up! Stand Up! Show Up! acknowledges and celebrates that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. The theme invites us all to work together to lead and action real transformation.

Besides the live-streamed welcome and closing events, the City will broadcast a series of performances via social media each day. The performances will give residents the chance to enjoy and experience some of the strong culture and great talent from our City.

This year’s NAIDOC Week program includes:

• cultural talks by local Aboriginal Elders

• performances by local Aboriginal boys group, Bridyia Mia Norps

• a bush walk and bush medicine session

• story time at the library, and

• traditional cooking demonstrations.

Mayor Ruth Butterfield said it is encouraging to see the growing interest of non-Aboriginal people in First Nation peoples’ culture and heritage.

“The City’s virtual NAIDOC celebration will be a week-long event with music, entertainment, and activities for the whole family. From sessions in bush medicine to traditional cooking demonstrations, this wide-ranging program will be of interest to the whole community.

“Having the celebrations for NAIDOC week virtually means the program will be widely accessible giving many more people the opportunity to engage with content, while also providing lasting material to be available for an extended period,” said Mayor Butterfield.

The NAIDOC Week program will be livestreamed and stored on the Champion Centre’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ChampionCentreArmadale

The Champion Centre is a gathering place for Aboriginal people delivering activities and programs in the Aboriginal way by the City’s Aboriginal Development Team. The team works alongside the local community to share knowledge and build bridges between community and services. The centre’s reputation continues to flourish with many recognising it as one of Armadale’s pillar community facilities.
