Young people who participated in the City’s Creative Art Project were excited to install their designs at the Youth Activity Area (YAA) on Orchard Avenue, Armadale, as the final stage of the Project.
The Creative Art Project commenced in October 2013 with a group of nine young people mentored by a professional artist to develop their skills in various contemporary art techniques to create original designs. These artworks were displayed at an Art Exhibition held mid-way through the project.
Mayor Henry Zelones said the project team, consisting of talented young artists aged between 15 and 17, have expressed a willingness to continue working on similar projects in the community. Other young people have also expressed an interest in being involved.
“The first installation of the designs involved the back side of the two ‘taco’ shaped ramps. The first design is the ‘A Team’ mural that reflects the group and is intended to represent Armadale as a community. The second design is the character piece which explores various characters around the ‘A for Armadale’ theme.
“The second installation, scheduled to be installed in early April, features the Armadale title piece as the main feature of the installation. Once again it is intended to represent the Armadale community and also acts as a link between the imagery featured in the other sections of the mural.
“Professional artists and project facilitators co-ordinated the installation process with support from the City’s Community Development Officer – Youth, and Youth Worker support from Save the Children.
“Youth culture and young people are a vital part of our community, and the installation of the artworks produced by local young artists is a tangible way to discourage illegal graffiti at the YAA and surrounding businesses,” said Mayor Zelones.
The Creative Art Project was funded by the WA Police Strategic Crime Prevention Division, with additional support from Armadale Youth Resources.
