Reducing waste, water and electricity use and using active transport are just some of the reasons that a Mundarda Child Care Centre in Kelmscott will be officially recognised for switching on to sustainable practices.

The Centre has been named a Switched on School through the Switch your thinking program for embedding sustainable practices into their operations; including green purchasing and energy efficiency that reduce the environmental footprint of the Centre.

City of Armadale Deputy Mayor Cr Ruth Butterfield said that the City is committed to sustainable practices and congratulates Mundarda Child Care Centre for being recognised as a Switched on School.

“Congratulations to the staff and children at the Centre. I hope that the recognition will encourage the Centre to continue embedding sustainability into their daily routine and set a positive example for other child care centres in the district to adopt sustainable practices.”

The children have helped to reduce waste by making playground displays out of recycled materials such as clothes and bicycle parts.

Students have also learnt that water is a precious resource and use water in buckets to wash their hands, rather than a running tap, which is then used on the gardens.

“Just as with any early education, the sustainable practices that the young children learn at the Centre will be a stepping stone to adopting them into their lives at home and into the future.

“It is important that we teach young children about the importance of our environmental footprint and how to reduce the impacts of waste,” said Deputy Mayor Butterfield.

Mundarda Child Care Centre actively participates in Little Green Steps WA, a not-for-profit program sponsored by the City of Armadale that supports education for sustainability in early years settings throughout the City.

Switch your thinking is a local government sustainability initiative developed by the City of Armadale, the City of Gosnells and Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale. For more information visit www.switchyourthinking.com.
