Talented artists from around the State have submitted to this year's Minnawarra Art Awards, the signature event for the Armadale Arts Festival (11-27 May), with the winners announced at a special event last Friday evening.

Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said it is wonderful for so many talented artists to have the opportunity to exhibit their work in the heart of Armadale.

“On behalf of Council congratulations to all the winners, especially our local artists,” said Mayor Zelones.

Perth based Eva Fernandez originating from Canada took out the coveted Gerry Gauntlett Award for A Rare Bird in the Lands, with the Stockland Sculpture Award going to Paul Kaptein, an award-winning artist who often exhibits in New York, for Mute Figure #6 (Fading Out Even As It Focuses).

Local artist Catharine Wiley was credited for her artwork Depression, a portrait of Art vs Depression founder Gavin Gracey, while Susan Roux received a highly commended award for Topography.

Exhibition Curator Ron Nyisztor said the work submitted for this year’s exhibition was of a very high calibre, and it was a difficult decision for the judges to make.

“This exhibition is definitely one you don't want to miss, with pieces across various mediums of paint, photography and sculpture, all showcased locally at the Greendale Centre, as part of the magnificent Armadale Arts Festival,” Ron said.

Judges for the Minnawarra Art Awards were Amanda Alderson, Kate Parker and Dr Ric Spencer.

They considered Eva's winning artwork to be sophisticated and technically strong, reminiscent of Victorian era, while Paul's sculpture was considered an interesting take on self-portraiture.

“Local artist Catherine Wiley was awarded for her poignant piece on depression, an important social matter for our community, with the judges commenting that it was strong and forthright, yet empathetic,” Ron said.

The public is invited to view the Minnawarra Art Awards, held as part of the Armadale Arts Festival through until Sunday 27 May at the newly renovated Greendale Centre on Coombe Avenue, Armadale.

The exhibition is open from 9am to 3pm daily and entry is free. The Armadale Arts Festival is presented by the City of Armadale and supported by Lotterywest.
