Three long-serving Armadale Councillors’ contributions to their community have been recognised with a Long and Loyal Service Award from the WA Local Government Association (WALGA).

Deputy Mayor Cr Ruth Butterfield, Cr Guenter Best and Cr Jim Stewart received the Local Government Honours Awards at the recent 2017 WA Local Government Convention.

City of Armadale Chief Executive Officer, Ray Tame congratulated the recipients for their contributions and hard work on behalf of their local communities.

“Between them, these Councillors have contributed almost fifty years of service and spent thousands of hours working passionately for their community.

“Cr Ruth Butterfield has represented the needs and aspirations of the River Ward on Council for the last 12 years. During that time she has hosted the City’s public citizenship ceremonies, been a passionate advocate for youth through her role on the Youth Advisory Committee, and instrumental in supporting the development of youth spaces within the district.

“Ruth also has a keen interest in transport and road safety issues throughout the region and advocates strongly for older residents through her position on the Positive Ageing Working Group.

“Councillor Jim Stewart has worked tirelessly for his community for over 24 years, both as a member of Council and member of a number of community groups. Jim was instrumental in the establishment of several of the City’s most popular cultural events, including the annual Armadale Highland Gathering celebrations and the Minnawarra Art Awards.

“Councillor Guenter Best has been an elected member since 2005 and during his 12 years with Council has been active in a large number of community groups and committees.

“Guenter’s contribution to the Aboriginal community has been his strongest passion as a Councillor, equalled only by his 50 years’ contribution to the Clock and Watch making industry of Western Australia.

“The annual Local Government Honours Awards recognise these individuals who go above and beyond the requirements of their role, and are a fitting recognition for their contribution to the communities they serve”, said Mr Tame.
