The City of Armadale is encouraging residents to join in a survey and assist with the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, as part of National Bird Week.
The count, now in its third year will take place over one week in October from Monday 17 October to Sunday 23 October.
The activity is run by BirdLife Australia and the Birds in Backyards team who aim to engage and educate the broader community in the natural world.
The information collated will create a snapshot of Australia’s birds at the same time every year, providing vital information on how local birds are faring.
City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said it’s an easy and fun activity that everyone can join in and help with.
“Results from the bird count can also be useful for the City to gauge how bird species are faring within our local parks.
“We will be able to note any urban impact from the creation of our new suburbs and if birds are adapting to the development in the region.
“The bird data can also be used to promote good local bird watching spots within our parks and reserves.
“Overtime, statistics collated across the state will provide a snapshot of the population of different species, quantify changes in numbers and assist with conservation of the endangered species within our region, said Mayor Zelones.
Last year the top birds recorded in Western Australia were the Rainbow Lorikeet, Galah and the New Holland Honeyeater.
