The City of Armadale is the first council in Western Australia to partner with Plastic Oceans Australasia (POA) to deliver a plastic waste reduction education program to local schools.

Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the partnership with POA reaffirms the City’s commitment to reduce waste and minimise its environmental footprint.

“We’re really pleased to partner with POA on this program which is underpinned by science and designed to help students break the plastic habit. The program’s materials align with WA and national curriculum - Achievement Standards and General Capabilities,” Mayor Butterfield said.

Armadale schools taking part in the program, include John Wollaston Anglican Community School, Harrisdale Primary and Senior High School, Clifton Hills Primary School, and Neerigen Brook Primary School.

The City has previously supported local schools with sustainable programs such as the The Recoverables School Program by SUEZ.

POA’s Executive Director, Ricki Hersburg, said the organisation is looking forward to engaging with the City and their community in delivering long-term social and environmental changes. She noted that the City of Armadale is the first council in WA to embrace the POA program.

“We congratulate the City of Armadale for taking a leadership role within WA to seriously address and encourage their community to reduce, reuse, and rapidly eliminate single use plastic,” she said.

It is estimated that around 8 to 12 million metric tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans each year. Some studies estimate more than a 30% increase in plastic waste since COVID 19, with one million tonnes of Australia’s annual plastic consumption, being single-use plastic.
