The City’s first Children’s Storytime and Toy, Games and Book Swap has been a resounding success, with 111.6kgs of items diverted from landfill.

This event saw 23 families attend, with 111.6kgs of items donated. 55kgs of these were swapped and taken home to be used and loved once again, whilst the remaining 56.6kgs were donated to St Vinnies and Drop ‘n’ Shop Reuse Centre, extending their life.

Following on from our Swap - Don’t Shop event in November, this now brings our total of diverted materials from landfill to 176.6kgs. A combined total of 67% of items have been swapped, and 33% of items repurposed.

These events are showcasing the simple ways the community can actively play a part in recycling and reducing the need to always buy new.

Mayor Ruth Butterfield said: “The success of these swap events are encouraging our community to shift their approach to buying new items and recycling items like clothes, books and toys. By utilising swap events like these, we can reduce the amount of waste and ensure we are maximising the life cycle of these items.”

Our next swap event is a Swap – Don’t Shop Kids edition and will take place during the Armadale Arts Festival in May (exact date TBC).
