The City of Armadale is again calling on local, young budding writers to put pen to paper and enter the annual Armadale Young Writers’ Awards.

This is the sixth year the awards have been held to recognise excellence in writing, encourage creativity and help develop writing talent in young people from all backgrounds across the City.

The Armadale Young Writers Awards will run from 1 to 30 June 2016, and entries will only be accepted during this time. The competition is open to students in Years 3 to 12 who reside, or attend school in the City of Armadale.

City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said the annual competition showcases the depth of young talent within the community.

“We have many promising young writers in Armadale and the Young Writers’ Awards are a great opportunity for them to express their gift and have their talent recognised,” he said.

“This is also the first time that we’ve opened the competition to Years 11 and 12 students so we’re expecting some excellent entries from these young authors.”

There will be the opportunity to enter into five different categories based on school year:

  • Years 3 and 4
  • Years 5 and 6
  • Years 7 and 8
  • Years 9 and 10
  • Years 11 and 12

In each category there will be a first prize of $200, second prize of $150 and a third prize of $100. A $50 book voucher will be given as an overall award for the best work judged from all award winning entries.

The City will collate the stories by all place getters into a book. These, along with a trophy and a certificate, will be presented to each place getter at the award ceremony.

A Perpetual Shield will be presented to the school of the student whose work is considered Best Overall.

To enter the Armadale Young Writers’ Award collect an entry form from Armadale, Kelmscott or Seville Grove library from 1 June, or download a form and more information from the library website Library.armadale.wa.gov.au.

Works must be prose only and stories should be 2000 words or less. Poetry, scripts or graphic novels will not be accepted.
