The City of Armadale is once again calling on aspiring young writers in the community to put pen to paper and enter the Armadale Young Writers’ Awards.

The awards, now in the ninth year, are held to encourage and recognise the writing creativity of young people across the City.

The Armadale Young Writers’ Award is open from 1 to 30 June 2019, and entries are only accepted during this time. This creative writing competition is only open to students in Years 3 to 12 who reside, or attend school in the City of Armadale.

City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said the competition showcases the creativity that young people have and their incredible imagination when it comes to story writing.

“Children love to express themselves and share their story with other readers, as well as receive their peer and expert feedback.

“The competition provides an avenue for our local aspiring young authors to develop their writing prowess and refine their skills”, he said.

Competition categories are broken into the following grade groups of years 3 & 4, 5 & 6, 7 & 8, 9 & 10 and 11 & 12.

In each category there will be a first prize of $200, second prize of $150 and a third prize of $100. An extra prize will be awarded for the work considered best overall. This will be judged from all the award winning entries and will receive a $50 book voucher.

Entries must be prose only and stories should be 2000 words or less. Poetry, scripts or graphic novels will not be accepted.

Each place getter will also receive a trophy, certificate and one free copy of the book containing all the award winning stories.

To enter the competition collect an entry form from the one of the City of Armadale Libraries, or visit library.armadale.wa.gov.au to find out the full details and download an entry form.

Entries will not be accepted after the close of library business on Sunday 30 June 2019.
