In an effort to tackle waste contamination, the City of Armadale has re-started its community bin tagging education program.
The program involves a quick visual check of the contents of households’ general waste and recycling bins at randomly selected properties across the City.
City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the bin tagging program allows for direct feedback to households via tags attached to bin handles.
“We understand it can be difficult to navigate all of the information about what can and can’t be put in bins,” said Mayor Butterfield.
“This program aims to improve household waste disposal and recycling habits while reducing contamination.”
Contamination occurs when non-recyclables are placed in the yellow lidded bin. This contamination is costly as the City pays a fee to dispose of contaminated recycling to landfill.
Soft plastics are the main cause of contamination and residents are reminded these items should be placed in the general waste bin or dropped off at the REDcycle bins at local supermarkets.
The City uses information from bin tagging to determine future waste education messaging to improve community understanding.
