The City of Armadale is encouraging children to read more during the summer holidays by visiting one of the three City libraries and borrowing books for the Pirate Summer Reading Challenge.

Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones says the Pirate Reading Challenge is a great way to excite and encourage your child’s imagination.

“Reading a variety of different books is important as it exposes children to new vocabulary and develops their literacy skills.

“The more children read the better they become at it. If they develop a love of reading while young it can open up new worlds and enrich their lives, as it becomes a pleasurable activity.

“To participate in the challenge, all you need to do is collect a bookmark from one of our libraries. Then complete your bookmark list by reading an adventure story, animal story, sporty story, funny story and a non-fiction story.

“Once you have completed your bookmark bring it into one of our libraries and show it to a library staff member to collect your reward”, said Mayor Zelones.

The City’s libraries have lots of fun activities planned during the January school holidays with a series of Pirate tales and other activities, suitable for every child who ever dreamed of taking to the high seas.
