The City of Armadale, in conjunction with local environmental volunteers, is calling for the assistance of volunteers to help eradicate the invasive Cotton Bush that is trying to destroy the precious upper reaches of the Canning River.

This weed seeds profusely and spreads quickly. The Araluen Walk Trail in Roleystone follows the Canning River and in recent years Cotton Bush has spread rapidly at this site.

City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones said there is growing local concern about the environmental impacts of the Narrow Leaf Cotton Bush.

“Local volunteers are invited to join the City on Sunday 7 September, from 9am to noon, to assist in eradicating this weed that has spread along the picturesque Araluen Walk Trail, damaging our natural environment.

“The ‘Cotton Bush Blitz’ will begin with hand weeding of cotton bush followed by a free pancake lunch, and the opportunity to network with like-minded people who have a great knowledge of local plant and animal species.

“Stay all morning, or come for a shorter time as every minute weeding is of enormous help with this project,” said Mayor Zelones.

Volunteers will meet at the Araluen Walk Trail, off Heritage Drive, Roleystone just prior to 9am on Sunday 7 September.

Tools, gloves, training, refreshments and good company will all be provided.

Volunteers are asked to please bring personal water bottles, closed in shoes and wet weather gear if necessary.

If you are able to assist, RSVP to the City’s Environmental Officer on 9399 0111.
