From 1 November 2013 the Cat Act 2011 came into effect. The new State Government legislation requires all cats over six months of age to be sterilised, micro-chipped and registered with their local Council.
The City, with funding provided by Round 2 of the Cat Implementation Grant Program 2013-2014, is offering a cat sterilisation subsidy for eligible cat owners that reside in the City of Armadale and meet the following criteria:
- The person seeking the subsidy must be a low income earner or pensioner (proof of a Health Care Card or Pension Card is required) and they must pay the full cost of the sterilisation in the first instance.
- After the cat is sterilised an application for the subsidy, including proof of sterilisation (on or after 26 August 2013) and residential status must be submitted to the City.
- Subsidies are limited to two cats per owner or property.
Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones said the new cat laws were introduced to promote responsible cat ownership and will allow the City to better manage cats in the community and minimise the nuisance to other residents.
"I encourage residents to apply quickly as there are only 150 subsidies available to assist eligible cat owners and they must be claimed by 30 June 2014.
"Owners of a registered cat must ensure that it has a registration tag attached to its collar when in a public place, this will ensure your cat is easily identified," said Mayor Zelones.
Applications for the sterilisation subsidy scheme are available to download from the City’s website or to collect in person from the Administration Building on 7 Orchard Avenue, Armadale.
