Trees are planted on verges and in our public open spaces each year as part of our Urban Forest Strategy to expand the canopy cover of the city.

An urban forest can be defined as all vegetation growing within the urban and peri-urban environment. The City of Armadale's urban forest is made up of green spaces across the City, including those on private property, on public streets and parks. Urban forests have many benefits such as reducing air pollution, supplying shade and cooling during heat waves, habitat for wildlife, improving the appearance and feel of our city, and encouraging general wellness.

Planting more street trees in your neighbourhood helps the City of Armadale to become a greener city. The City is aware that the amount of tree canopy cover varies considerably throughout its suburbs. Locations with low canopy cover are prioritised each planting season.

Select locations in the following suburbs will receive a letter in early March notifying residents of upcoming planting:

  • Armadale
  • Champion Lakes
  • Kelmscott
  • Harrisdale
  • Seville Grove

Visit Engage Armadale for more information.

Planting Season Timeline

  • Planting occurs in the cooler months each year to allow time for the trees to establish over winter
  • The planting season is weather dependant but usually occurs June to late September each year
  • As tree plantings may be delayed by weather or other unforeseen events, we're unable to provide an exact planting date
  • Each new tree will have a stake either side for support, a tree guard around the base of the tree and be mulched

How our trees are selected

The City works with well established, and industry accredited tree producers to ensure species diversity and that only the healthiest and sturdiest specimens are purchased for planting. Bulk tree stock is ordered 9 – 12 months in advance and is often specifically grown for the City. Ad hoc tree stock for our Residents Requests program can be ordered as late as November in anticipation of the planting season the following year.

Tree species are carefully considered ensuring they are appropriate for the conditions, and that diversity and continuity in the landscape is achieved. Streetscapes with tree lined streets of consistent species can improve property values and create a sense of place. As such the species for each street are selected and pre ordered each year in set quantities for each species.

Caring for a tree

The first two years after a tree has been planted is a critical time for establishment. The City is responsible for the essential care of the tree during this time to help it find its feet (or roots). This includes summer watering for a minimum of two seasons and formative pruning where needed.

Residents are encouraged to help care for street trees by:

  • Watering in the warmer months
  • Top up mulch
  • Applying slow release fertiliser
  • Removing rubbish
  • Weeding at base of tree

What if I want a different tree or location?

Tree species are carefully considered ensuring they are appropriate for the conditions, and that diversity and continuity in the landscape is achieved. Streetscapes with tree lined streets of consistent species can improve property values and create a sense of place. As such the species for each street are selected and pre ordered each year.

Trees are typically planted centrally on the verge but we understand that people use the verge for different purposes. Get in touch with our project officer, who is more than willing to work with you to position the tree to best suit your situation in line with regulations.

I wasn't included in this year's program. Can I still get a tree?

The City provides a limited number of street trees to residents on an annual basis as part of its Street Tree Planting Program. Any residential property owner within the City can request a street tree be planted on the verge adjoining their property. All you need to do is submit a completed Street Tree Request form to the City. Visit the free street tree program for more details.

Please note - Any new requests for tree will be considered for planting as part of the following years Tree Planting Program.
