The City of Armadale is set to continue its reputation for being a green and attractive place to live after the Council endorsed the Draft Urban Forest Strategy at its meeting held on Monday 13 May, 2014.
Mayor Henry Zelones said the Strategy will provide guidance for the ongoing development and management of the City’s Urban Forest.
"Trees are a major urban infrastructure asset. They provide economic, social and ecological benefits to society which can often be overlooked.
"The Strategy draws upon the existing landscape of the City to define landscape precincts based on land use and environmental and social values.
"By strengthening the landscape character there is opportunity to provide future generations with a resilient, healthy and diverse urban environment.
"In past decades tree populations in many Australian cities have declined, particularly with the loss of private open space (the traditional backyard).
"As such the Strategy was developed to guide the City to maximise the environmental, psychological, economic and aesthetic benefits that trees provide to the community, now and into the future.
Ultimately, it will ensure we provide streetscapes that are attractive, healthy, safe and appropriate to the location.
"It is important to recognise that this strategy will not impact on bushfire preparedness strategies that the State, City and community already work with. It will guide us in developing green, pleasant, sustainable communities that are also as safe as possible from the threat of fire,” said Mayor Zelones.
