Upgrades memorial park
Release Date:
Tuesday, 12 April 2016

Accessible and inclusive play facility upgrades to the City of Armadale’s existing playground located in Memorial Park are now underway, with completion by mid-year 2016.

The upgrades to the play space will be for all abilities and will encourage child development in all of the five areas; physical, well-being and movement skills; social and emotional development; approaches to learning; thinking abilities; communication and language.

Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said the City of Armadale is committed to ensuring that all children, including those with a disability, have equal access to play spaces so they can learn, grow and develop through play.

“The project delivers on the City of Armadale Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2011 – 2016 outcomes, to be an accessible and inclusive city and the creation of the ‘play for all’ spaces as part of this project supports the City’s Count Me In initiatives.

“Accessible and inclusive playgrounds are places where children of all abilities can experience fun and challenging play alongside their friends and family members.

“These 'play for all' spaces use a range of natural and built elements to encourage different types of play experiences, such as active, exploratory, social and quiet play.

“Innovative approaches in the design and construction of these spaces create expanded opportunities for children with a disability”, said Mayor Zelones.

The play pieces will include; jungle drums; an elevated sand table and sandpit; timber chimes, a Viburnum Hedge; sensory posts and low stepping walls.

The installation of these new play pieces will complement the pre-existing playground and will be connected by a continuous path of new rubber soft fall funded by the City.

The City was successful in its application for Community Infrastructure Grants in 2015 and received $20,000 for this project, funded by the Disability Services Commission and administered by WALGA.
