With National Recycling Week just gone and the recent changes to what you can recycle, the City of Armadale wants residents to be mindful of what they can place in their recycling bin this Christmas.

City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said the City is committed to maintaining a sustainable future for everyone, so it’s important that residents are aware of what they can recycle this Christmas.

“It’s a busy time of year and everyone is rushing to finish their Christmas shopping but I urge residents to think about what might happen to the wrapping after Christmas.

“Christmas may be a time of giving, but after Christmas day there is often a lot of waste left over.”

“When you’re wrapping presents, choose recycled paper or paper that can be recycled instead of shiny wrapping paper. Or consider using a fabric ribbon, twine or string instead of plastic tape to wrap gifts, as these can be reused.”

“Before you throw it away, take the time to check what can and can’t be recycled in your yellow bin.

“Boxes, cards and envelopes, gift bags with string and ribbon handles removed, and wrapping paper that isn’t shiny can be recycled, or try reusing wrappings.”

“People might be surprised to know that bubble wrap, ribbons and bows, small gift tags, cellophane and packing foam can’t be recycled and need to be placed in the rubbish bin or upcycled at your local playgroup or school.”

“Consider reusing these items instead of throwing them away.”

The other way people can reduce waste during the holiday season is to plan their meals for the number of guests.

“The holiday season is a busy period where friends and family catch up over the break. If you find yourself with leftover food, try and reuse it the next day or consider creating a worm farm or compost, or buying a bokashi bucket for food scraps.”

“Just like gift wrapping and packaging, it’s also important to know what food and drink packaging can go into your recycling bin.”
