Armadale - Focus 2018 sample image
Release Date:
Thursday, 22 February 2018

It’s time for all amateur photographers to pick up their camera and get creative for a chance to win up to $300 in the 2018 FOCUS Photographic Competition in March.

Aspiring photographers are invited to capture images of the City at Play, this year’s theme for the local history photographic competition.

The Birtwistle Local Studies Library is looking for photographs which showcase recreation spaces in the district being enjoyed by residents, their families, or four-legged friends. Wherever there’s play, there’s a potential picture of a relaxed or adventurous moment.

The City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said that the competition offered recreational photographers a chance to showcase their work and capture those playful moments.

“The competition aims to capture historical reality, favouring truth over beauty or visual experimentation.

“If you can get both in one image, you could do well, but remember: historians like to see every detail of a scene, rather than a glamour shot where details have been lost or obscured.”

This year there are two adult categories: Present day - images taken within the City of Armadale during the last five years, and Historical Category - images taken within the City of Armadale before 1990.

Present Day Category: 1st place $300
  2nd place $200
  3rd place $100
Historical Category: 1st place $200
  2nd place $100
  3rd place $50

Winners also receive an acrylic mounted print of their image.

“Over the past few years, the City has opened many new recreation and leisure areas, especially in Piara Waters and Harrisdale. However, play also includes parades, local performances, concerts, and public celebrations like the City’s Carols by Candlelight and Australia Day celebrations, fetes and fairs.

“The competition offers the opportunity for photographers to capture and document how people have fun in 2018 at these new places, along with the old favourite areas within the City.”

The competition is open to residents across Perth but photos must be of recreation places in the City of Armadale.

Entries will open from Thursday 1 March to Saturday 31 March and online entry is available only during this time.
