Due to a large amount of illegal dumping the City of Armadale will proceed with the temporary closure of Koorden Close in Champion Lakes until further notice.

City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said the City considers closure by a lockable gate as the best solution to address this problem.

“On a weekly basis large quantities of rubbish such as tyres, oil, building products, glass, car parts and general household rubbish, is illegally dumped in this area.

“We encourage residents to be vigilant and report cases of illegal dumping on road reserves, bushland areas or local streets.

“Dumping is an expensive issue for the City and ratepayers; in the 2015/16 financial year over 1,500 tonnes was collected at a cost of over $500,000.

“The City is concerned about the increase in illegal dumping occurring throughout the hills area and in our newer suburbs, including the Forrestdale Business Park.

“Dumped rubbish is creating an eye-sore and hazard for local residents. This is simply not fair to the people who live or work in these areas.

“Don’t let our community become a dumping ground. If you see people dumping rubbish or junk take note of their details, including vehicle registration make and model, and report it to the City”, he said.

People caught illegally dumping rubbish in bushland areas or road reserves can receive a $500 or $2000 on the spot fine. Offenders may also face prosecution under the Litter Act 1979, and incur a fine of up to $5000 for an individual or $10,000 for a body corporate.

Although the road will be closed to vehicle traffic, pedestrians will still have access to the footpath under the Tonkin Highway overpass at the end of Koorden Close, leading to Gosnells.
