At age 10, Piara Waters Primary School student Yoshna Naidoo has become one of the City of Armadale’s youngest published authors - penning a new children’s book printed and distributed by the City.
Yoshna was the winner of the Ripper and Roary picture book story competition coordinated by the City in 2015 – a project sparked by the imagination of writer-illustrator and local primary school teacher Sean Avery.
The author and illustrator of All Monkeys Love Bananas and Harold and Grace was commissioned by the City earlier in the year to design mascots for the libraries’ literacy programs – Year One Ripper Readers and Pre-Primary Ripper Nippers.
After realising he’d become attached to the two adventurous dinosaur mascots he had created, Sean offered to illustrate them as part of a City-wide writing competition for year 5 and 6 students.
Yoshna’s story Roary’s Lost Books was chosen from dozens of entries and Sean set about illustrating the adventure of two book-loving dinosaurs on a hunt for lost library books.
With a limited edition of the books recently printed by the City, Sean and Yoshna met for the first time to celebrate the result of their collaboration and participate in the obligatory book signings.
The books will make their way to all City libraries, primary school libraries and as a giveaway during Children’s Book Week activities in August.
