State Budget implications for Armadale

The City of Armadale is seeking more commitment from the State Government to the Armadale Strategic Regional Centre following the announcement of the State Budget.

“It is positive to see an allocation of $200,000 in this year’s Budget towards ‘preliminaries’ for development of the Justice Precinct, however it is disappointing to see no allocation to the actual works in the forward estimates,” said Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM JP.

“The allocated funds will start the process of the relocation of the courthouse however the entire project will cost over $50 million so there is still a large commitment that is required.

“The CEO and I highlighted the need for the development of the Justice Precinct at the recent Cabinet visit in March.

“We are facing a range of issues in the area, the Armadale Courthouse is under capacity for the district’s needs, and the Police station is over-crowded and in need of expansion or replacement. Operationally the layout of the area is simply is not suitable.

“We are pleased to see a commitment in the development of schools in our area. We have one of the fastest growing communities in the nation and are in need for more educational facilities. The City has been working closely with the State Government on nine different co-located school sites, to ensure our community has access to the infrastructure they need.

“The announcement of additional funds for Armadale Senior High and Cecil Andrews Senior High is thoroughly welcomed and has recognised the great work of these schools. However there is an ongoing need for more schools in the City’s growth areas of Piara Waters, Harrisdale, Haynes and Hilbert to ensure the 60,000 new residents that will move into these areas have access to quality education options.

“We will continue to campaign for major projects to further develop our City and cater for our growing communities,” said Mayor Zelones.
