A revised draft concept plan outlining a long-awaited upgrade to the Armadale District Town Hall has been released by the City of Armadale for further public consultation.

The original plans for the $4 Million project have been through several iterations after taking into consideration discussions between the City’s representatives, professional consultants and extended public consultation.

The revised plans are now believed to provide the best overall approach to getting on with this important City project

Key points in the draft design include:

  • Upgrades to the current Main Hall with improved acoustics and new air conditioning.
  • Mechanically operated retractable seating for 220 and retained gallery seating for 50 which together with floor seating allows for a capacity of 300.
  • New Lesser Hall that provides a visual balance between heritage and contemporary components and provides for current and future demand by user groups.
  • New low front sloped lawn providing good visibility of the facility and guiding access.
  • Retractable stage extensions.
  • New sound system.
  • Additional backstage area for performers.
  • Front entrance facilities converted in to meeting rooms.
  • Front toilets added in 1961 removed to reinstate the original frontage.
  • Kitchen relocated to its original position, and enhanced to provide a central service and servicing of kitchen from the rear of the facility.
  • Supper Room renovated with its original entrance to the original building re-opened.
  • The current kitchen at the front of the building to be made a public foyer space.
  • New paved entry plaza giving a clear separation between heritage and contemporary components.
  • Glass frontage to allow clear view of heritage components from the north east perspective.
  • Internal toilet block that serves all areas.

City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM JP said proponents of the revised design had taken care to preserve and enhance the heritage value of the original hall while creating additional space to cater for the needs of the growing community.

“Upon completion of the upgrades, the functionality of the hall will be significantly improved, providing a facility better able to meet the community’s needs now and into the future,” he said.

“This final concept has been assessed by the WA Heritage Council to ensure adequate consideration has been given to the unique heritage aspects of the original hall,

“Prior to giving the final go-ahead, the City is honouring its commitment to enable user groups and interested parties the opportunity to view the plan.

“The drawings have been amended, having regard to matters such as acoustics and various design aspects including the front wings, bathrooms, seating and the green room.”

With the addition of the new activity space it is envisaged that the main hall will predominantly be used for larger civic and other functions such as the arts festival, shows, concerts and some casual hire by large groups requiring the large space. The new lesser hall will accommodate regular user groups and assist in the larger civic functions.

General comments on the plan are welcome and the public comment period closes on 6 May 2016.
