Armadale Aspire, a career development program for local Year 10 students, concluded for another year with three students offered work experience opportunities.

Armadale Aspire, now in its second year, assisted 30 students with career development opportunities.

This year the program teamed local students with seven local businesses, including Armadale Shopping City, Armadale Wildlife and Reptile Centre, Beaver Tree Services, Classic Sounds, Daly and Shaw, Explosive Dance and Theatre and RoleyDogs to provide ‘real-life’ opportunities said Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP.

“The students spent one day a week for seven weeks attending the program and were shown job interview techniques, appropriate social media use for employment, developed a resume and cover letter and were taught critical career-readiness skills.

“For the first time, students also participated in an entrepreneur's day, which saw them involved in a workshop with Perth based social entrepreneur Darren Lomman from Greenbatch, as well as given the chance to learn from a number of local entrepreneurs and small business leaders.

“Businesses were impressed with how engaged the students were, and thrilled to have the chance to offer them an insight into how each of their industries were run, and ultimately assist the students in making future employment and career decisions”, he said.

Partnering high schools include Armadale Senior High School, Carey Baptist College, Cecil Andrews College, Dale Christian School, John Wollaston Anglican Community School, Kelmscott Senior High School, Roleystone Community College, and Southern Hills Christian College.

The program was originally based on the Kwinana Industry Council's award winning iProjects, and has been adapted to fit the City of Armadale's changing industry and training needs.
