Once again a growing number of talented young artists have impressed the judges and exhibition-goers alike with the level of talent at this year’s Outside the Frame Art Awards.

More than 110 entries were received, with works by Year 11 and 12 students from schools across metropolitan Perth, to exhibit at this year’s Awards held from 20 to 24 August, at Armadale District Hall.

Mayor Henry Zelones said the judges had a difficult job in selecting the winning pieces, with such a high standard of entries.

“They were highly impressed by the level of innovation and commented on the skill and use of contemporary aesthetics.

“Once again, these young students have produced art works of a very high standard that have wowed art lovers from across Perth that attended the exhibition.

“The City is committed to providing young people in the community with the opportunity to enrich and extend their artistic ideas and skills to develop their talents.

“Outside the Frame Art Awards provides students with the chance to showcase their art work and gain recognition with a network of support and mentorship in the art world,” said Mayor Zelones.

This year’s exhibition featured works from 19 different schools including Sevenoaks Senior College, Kalamunda Senior High School, Canning Vale College, Cecil Andrews Senior High School and Penrhos College.

Competition was very close this year with Kalamunda Senior High School taking out the top accolade by a small margin, winning the $1000 prize for best school entrant with the highest quality of art across the six categories.

The inaugural MRA Young Artist Award was awarded to Canning Vale College student Melanie Lai, for her winning artwork, Paradise Lost.

Winners were chosen from categories including prints, drawing, sculpture, textiles, photography/digital media and painting, with first place taking home $200, second receiving $100 and third place winning $80.
