Meditation Know How

Meditation is the practice of quietening and focusing the mind and thoughts to bring about an experience of peace and calm. This is achieved through various techniques which include deep, regulated breathing, mindfulness practices, relaxation and concentrated focus.

Mandy BeckerKnox has practiced and taught yoga and meditation for over 25 years – internationally and also locally at Kookaburra Creek Yoga Centre in Bedfordale. Having trained in traditional yoga in India and Australia, Mandy has a wealth of practical knowledge to share.

Positive Ageing Sessions

Throughout the year the City of Armadale will be hosting a series of Positive Ageing Sessions at the Armadale Library to engage older members of the community.

The workshops are held each month and cover a wide range of topics such as safety and security, health, activities for older people and other useful information.

The City is proud to present the following Positive Ageing Sessions:

  • Memoir Writing

    Wednesday 4 May, 1.30 – 2.30pm

    Thinking about writing your memoirs but don’t know where to begin.

    This writing workshop explains the structure of a memoir and will give you some tips and tricks to getting started with writing activities.

  • Bottled Memories

    Wednesday 4 May, 3 – 4pm
    Armadale Library, Armadale Central Shopping Centre

    Bottle one of your precious memories in this engaging workshop for display in History House Museum’s upcoming exhibition Memory Lane.

    Use the materials supplied or bring your own to create a memory in a jar.

    The Memory Lane exhibition evokes memories of the Armadale district over time through the five senses.

Adopting and Caring

Monday 9 May, 6.30 – 7.30pm

Over the last few years the debate on whether we should make adoption easier has increased. At the same time we have witnessed a number of shocking failures in the child protection system across the nation.

Arguments have been made that greater emphasis should be placed on adoption options rather than foster care.

Dr Tony Buti MLA, will discuss and examine these arguments during the lecture as part of his Armadale Public Lecture Series.

Better Beginnings Parent Workshop

Thursday 19 May, 9.30 – 10.30am

Rebecca Laffar-Smith is a children’s author and publisher. During this session she will provide advice to parents of children who find reading difficult or unenjoyable.

Rebecca will talk about the journey that led her to establish Aulexic; a small publishing house specialising in books for children with language and literacy difficulties. She launched her P.I. Penguin series in 2015 under the name Bec J Smith. Copies of Rebecca’s books will be available for purchase at this session.

King of the Racecourse

Friday 20 May, 10.30 – 11.30am
Armadale Library, Armadale Central Shopping Centre

The Hon. Robyn McSweeney MLC, was determined that her great grandfather have his rightful place in Australian History. So she researched his life and wrote his biography – Albert Edmund Cockram: King of the Racecourse 1870 to 1943.

This book explores Albert’s life and his achievements; including his involvement in the racing, mining, agriculture and exploration industries.

You are invited to learn more about this remarkable man when Robyn visits the Armadale Library to promote her book and recall this interesting time in history.

Advanced Photography Workshop

Saturday 28 May, 1 – 4pm
Armadale Library, Armadale Central Shopping Centre

This advanced photography workshop is perfect for those who are looking to refine their photography skills by programming their own camera settings. Topics covered in this session include aperture, shutter speed, white balance and light metering.

Participants will need to bring a digital camera or DSLR which features program or manual mode for practical exercises. Participants are expected to be experienced and familiar with their camera.
