The Waterwheel Community Shed Inc. (formerly the Roleystone Community Men’s Shed) has a new home at the former fire station in Bedfordale.
The non-gender specific community organisation moved to the Brian O’Neill Reserve Community Centre, at 2 Waterwheel Road, this week following necessary building alterations by the City.
Originally built in 1985, the old fire station was extended in 1994. In 2021, it became available as a community facility following the relocation of the Bedfordale Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade to a purpose-built fire station.
“I’m delighted to see the much loved former fire station repurposed into a home for the Waterwheel Community Shed,” said City Mayor Ruth Butterfield.
The City has licensed Waterwheel Community Shed Inc. to use the building for an initial five-year period.
“The Waterwheel Community Shed will be a place where everyone can feel safe, welcome and included while they work on their own projects and hobbies, or learn new skills. People can stay connected to community and improve social belonging through the group, which is vital for good mental health and wellbeing.”
The reuse of the site aligns with City’s objectives to support the development and sustainability of a diverse range of community groups, and to create opportunities for lifelong learning and growing community connections.
In addition to helping people connect, Community Sheds perform invaluable work, from restoring furniture to building playground equipment.
