NAIDOC Celebration Day
Release Date:
Monday, 20 June 2016

Celebrate the culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the City of Armadale at the annual NAIDOC Celebration Day gathering on Tuesday 5 July, 10am to 3pm.

Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said that despite NAIDOC week’s cultural significance this is an all-inclusive celebration and everyone is invited to take part in an array of activities.

“Every year it is encouraging to see the growing numbers of non-indigenous people attending our NAIDOC celebrations, as it demonstrates a willingness to learn more about the culture, history and achievements of our indigenous community members.

This year’s NAIDOC theme, Songlines – The living narrative of our nation, highlights the importance of Songlines and Dreamtime to the existence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Through Songlines Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are able to maintain and share sacred stories and ceremonies for thousands of years.

“This free community event is a chance to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures with music, entertainment, food and information stalls providing loads of information on programs and services available to the community.

“There will be performances by a range of well- known local indigenous musicians including The Merindas, Hot Likwid and Hip Hop artist K-P with DJ EDUB.

“A fashion show this year will highlight Brothaboy & Sista Girl fashions and Red Opium designs along with young dancers from the Mungart Yongah Aboriginal Dancers performing.

“I encourage everyone to come along and experience the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultures and enjoy the festivities of the day,” he said.

The City of Armadale NAIDOC Celebration Day will be held at the Champion Centre on the Bob Blackburn Oval and club rooms, Challis Road, Seville Grove.
