Key art leaders for Western Australia gathered in Armadale last week to judge artworks for the City of Armadale’s Minnawarra Art Awards with $17,000 allocated in Awards.

Professionally curated by the nationally recognised curator Robert Buratti, the highprofile judges were impressed by the calibre of works presented and the number of local artists that were also included.

Judges included Dr Stephano Carboni, the Director of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Dr Darren Jorgensen, Senior Lecturer at University of Western Australia and internationally artist Ben Juniper.

The evening was also an opportunity for the Hon John Day MLA - Minister for Health; Culture and the Arts to officially open the inaugural Armadale Arts Festival.

Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said this year was the first time that the City opened the competition nationally, calling on artists all around Australia to become part of Armadale’s vibrant arts community.

“The Armadale region is indeed home to a very creative and mature arts community and all visitors to the exhibition will revel in this visual feast of the talent we are surrounded by,” he said.

“Of the 61 artists invited to display their work, there are 15 local artists, eight from regional WA, and interstate artists made up a smaller but no less significant contribution.

“As part of the City’s commitment to support our local arts community, the evening was also an opportunity for the launch of the inaugural Armadale Arts Festival - which will run over 17 days, with 30 events showcasing a wide range of talent from this region.”

The Minnawarra Art Awards is open to the public every day between 11am – 4pm until Sunday 17 May. The exhibition is free to enter and all artworks are for sale.
