Edible walls, bird baths and insect hotels are just some of the submissions anticipated from Young Re-inventor of the Year. What makes them unique is that they’ll be made from rubbish.

Young Re-inventor of the Year, delivered by City of Armadale in partnership with Switch Your Thinking, is now in its fifth year and is once again calling on young people from across Western Australia to re-invent waste.

Submissions are invited from early years learning centres, primary schools, high schools, community groups and individuals and there is a $3,000 prize pool on offer.

Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said the City encourages young people to take up the challenge and look at different ways to reuse, re-purpose and re-invent waste that would otherwise end up in landfill.

“When young people put their heads together and brainstorm these environmental projects, their creativity is amazing with quirky and inventive ideas.

“The Roleystone Community College and Clifton Hills Primary School have already registered and it would be great to see more schools taking up the challenge,” he said.

Last year the winning re-inventors took home rainwater tanks, sustainability books, sustainable fashion items, worm farms and compost bins to continue their waste reducing behaviour.

Submissions close on 23 October and further details including project ideas and curriculum links can be found at switchyourthinking.com.

Switch Your Thinking is a local government sustainability initiative—developed by the City of Armadale, the City of Gosnells and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.

Young Re-inventor of the Year is funded through the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Account administered by the Waste Authority.
