Following the success of the program Learning English Through Storytime in 2016, the City of Armadale will continue to host the sessions throughout 2017 at one of the City’s libraries each term.
The Learning English Through Storytime program supports children and their families to practice and develop English in a more relaxed, enjoyable educational environment.
The program is suited to children aged three to four years and their carer’s, and introduces songs, rhymes, stories and fun interactive activities that assist in improving children’s confidence and prepares them for their future schooling.
City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said last year the sessions were almost at full capacity each term, with a grandmother joining a family group and enjoying the activities.
“There are a number of families in our community, newly arrived from countries such as Nigeria, India and Burma, where English is their second language.
“With such a large number of countries represented each term, participants also have the opportunity to establish and make friends with other new arrivals in our community.
“It’s great to see the children gaining confidence and enjoying the activities and receiving a head start in breaking the language barrier, before they commence formal schooling,” he said.
As parents and children participate in the activities together, adults that attend are required to have basic English to enable them to understand directions and communicate effectively during the sessions.
The next sessions run for seven weeks, every Friday afternoon from 1.30 to 2.30pm at Seville Grove Library starting on 17 February, then 24 February, 3 March, 10 March, 17 March, 24 March and 31 March.
