Following the success of the pilot program earlier this year the City of Armadale will host the second Learning English through Storytime Program, commencing in October at the Kelmscott Library.

The program assists children, aged three to four years, and their families improve and practice English in a fun and educational environment.

City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said the first series for the program held at the Armadale Library in July, was considered a huge success with 11 children participating with their Mums and even one grandmother joined in the activities.

“The amount of interest already shown in the program indicates the number of families living in our community with English as their second language.

“The participants in this series originated from a variety of countries including; India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Burma, Indonesia, Malaysia and Nigeria,” he said.

The sessions include songs, rhymes and stories plus interactive activities, which develop children’s confidence and school readiness.

As parents and children participate in the activities together throughout the sessions, adults that attend are required to speak basic English so they are able to communicate effectively.

The next sessions run for seven weeks, every Monday afternoon, 1.30 to 2.30pm at Kelmscott Library starting Monday 17 October, then 24 October, 31 October, 7 November, 14 November, 21 November and 28 November.

The City of Armadale Libraries will continue running the Learning English through Storytime program in 2017 at one of our three libraries each term.
